2025 Foxborough Supercross Recap

What a mud show.

Cold temperatures and rain turned Round 12 of the 2025 Monster Energy Supercross season into an infamous mudder that became a ridiculous display of man vs weather rather than the whole point of the sport.

Snorkeled dirt bike anyone?

The 450 class raced for only 12 minutes (instead of 20). As for the 250 East? Some commercial breaks felt longer than the eight minute Main Event (instead of 15) held at the open air Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA.

A random drawing for the podium in both classes nearly summed up who stepped on the box in a mostly laughable contest perhaps leading some to ask, why bother?

In the 450s, Justin Cooper grabbed a soggy Holeshot then burst into the lead ahead of Shane McElrath. But Aaron Plessinger, his forte seemingly in these types of conditions needed less than a minute to pass McElrath and barely another minute to take the lead. Somehow he kept it on two wheels, unlike many others, while delicately navigating his way around the slop, sometimes at a crawl, until he crossed the finish line more than 20 seconds in front of McElrath.

"As soon as I got into the lead I knew I just had to go and stay up, but I knew Shane was right there and he rode an insane race," Plessinger said. "With how the season started, I was sitting in California not two months ago and I was man what am I doing here."

The win marked Plessinger's second career 450 class victory and added to a mid-season resurgence with him reaching the podium in recent weeks and contending upfront while erasing the memories of bad rounds to start the year.

McElrath, generally a mid-pack rider who also relishes muddy conditions and won his Heat race, grabbed his first 450 class podium in a career best second place, holding down the runner-up spot after Cooper slipped and fell.

"This week was a really good week mentally and tonight was all about opportunity," he said. "I was on the line and I was praying, 'God just give me traction.' Got a good start, leaned back, started shifting, and almost lost it in the first corner. This (track) it was so sticky. Some of the ruts were good and some you were dragging footpegs."

In perhaps the biggest twist of the night or more a total bungling of the television coverage, Cooper Webb finished third. At one time during the Main Event, the Championship points leader appeared headed for points disaster as Chase Sexton closed in on a podium spot while Webb struggled to get his footing hovering outside the Top 5, even falling twice. Ken Roczen was somewhere, not sure anyone really knew where he was positioned. Another scene showed Malcom Stewart resembling a beetle writhing in pain stuck halfway under a rock when he couldn't wriggle out from under his dirt bike.

Meanwhile, Justin Barcia had a loose grip on third which he couldn't hold. Sexton tipped over at the face of a jump (no one was really taking the jumps save for a few of the daring) also running third but couldn't get the traction needed to get going. Eventually he moved off track to rejoin the race. One jump Sexton managed to take soared him over a downed rider as he missed the warning lights. In an ordinary world, he'd face a penalty. No word yet on whether he'll get docked points and/or spots. Arguably, taking the jump likely saved him from plowing into the other rider.

Towards the end, Roczen with torn shoulder ligaments, limped his way to the finish line in third. Then the broadcasting hysterics began. No, Webb already finished in third. Wait, what? Beep, beep, beep, back it up.

Unbeknownst to those in the commentary booth and behind the TV cameras - which felt more like a small Midwest town's junior college production - Webb, in a last-ditch effort, got around Roczen and Sexton on the final lap. Instead of losing points to Sexton he managed to gain points and if Webb secures the 450 class Championship, no doubt many will mention this wreck of a Night Show as the defining moment of the season.

As for the 250 East, this 8-minute farce totally upended the Championship race. Points leader and defending champion Tom Vialle got to fifth from ninth then went down, couldn't get up and finished last. RJ Hampshire, the defending 250 West Champion, threw all caution to the wind at the start, completely lost traction and pulled a Pete Rose sliding into second base before the first turn taking out a couple other riders in the process. He finished 15th.

But the headline belongs to Chance Hymas, making history by becoming the sixth different winner is as many rounds for the 250 East, also his first career win. Once he got the lead midway through the race, i.e. four minutes in, he rode pretty good, even taking jumps and stayed on two wheels until the checkers.

"This means so much to me. We've been working our butts off to get here. I know these were completely different circumstances but...to finish first you have to finish," he said.

In more firsts, Collin Park and Gage Linville finished second and third respectively, each landing on the podium for the first time.

Despite finishing last, Vialle retains the Red Plate however, instead of a 10 point lead over Hampshire as he had entering Round 12, Seth Hammaker, who finished ninth at Foxborough and was in third-place 13 points back prior, now shares the Red Plate with Vialle.

Hampshire, falls to third but just three points back, and Hymas sits fourth, eight points out of first and Nate Thrasher in fifth only has a 10 point deficit. Park even has a shot now only 15 points from first. It sets up for an anyone-can-win title fight with a few rounds left.

Yikes. Maybe another disaster awaits in Philadelphia on Saturday for Round 13 at Lincoln Financial Field with rain in the forecast. This time an East / West Showdown.
