2025 Anaheim 2 Supercross Recap

Three rounds, three different winners and now three different Red Plate holders at the top of the class to start the 2025 Monster Energy Supercross season.

Rainy gates dropped for Round 3 at Angel Stadium on Saturday in Anaheim, the second of two rounds at the baseball venue, as the premier 450 class battled it out for much of their race while the 250 West class proved mostly uneventful until the podium speeches.

Looking to regroup after not winning the first two rounds and firing his agent earlier this week following accusations of financial impropriety, defending Champion Jett Lawrence dueled with nemesis Jason Anderson before finally making the pass with about six minutes to go and took off from there. Both riders have history together, and not in the good sense, but some honest bar-banging before a clean pass gave Lawrence his first win of the series.

"You had to be very patient," Lawrence said. "Jason was riding really well and I was struggling to find anywhere to gain heaps on him or try and make a pass. You kind of had to get risky in the whoops, they were very edgy I think we were both got sketchy going through them."

The win gets Lawrence out of an early points hole and he now sits third in the standings, tied with Eli Tomac, both five points from the lead. Ken Roczen finished second for his second podium of the year and his 2-4-2 results to start the season gives him the lead for the first time since he led all laps for the opening round in 2022. The veteran and fan favorite contested with Lawrence and Anderson early in the race moving up from fourth and ultimately securing the runner-up spot.

On his end, Anderson passed Justin Cooper for the lead after six minutes and looked good for the win even though Lawrence was moving forward rapidly behind him. Lawrence and Anderson went head-to-head in their Heat race, the victor going to Anderson but he was unable to hold rank for the Main.

Tomac, last week's winner, overcame a bad start leaving him outside the Top 15 to finish seventh. Cooper, who needed the LCQ then grabbed the Holeshot, finished sixth. The other Cooper, Cooper Webb, enjoyed or endured (you pick) a mostly quiet night finishing eighth. Opening round winner Chase Sexton made a late push for a podium spot but settled on fourth. Jorge Prado, the 2-time MXGP 450 class Champion (that overseas series) crashed in practice separating his shoulder and ending his night.

The 250 West class also featured a third different winner in as many rounds as Julien Beaumer finished second and Cole Davies, taking advantage of a last lap crash by Jordon Smith, finished third for his first career podium.

The #38 Rider grabbed the Holeshot and led wire to wire taking the checkers for the first time this season helping to backfill the hole he dug from poor racing in the first two rounds. Though no fireworks on the track, the #38 rider expressed disdain towards Beaumer on the podium for allegedly running his mouth. "You pissed off the bull last week," #38 rider said.

Conversely, Beaumer turned the other cheek saying "(#38 rider) rode great, hats off to him, he was a better man tonight."

Likely increasing his fanbase incrementally, Beaumer holds on to the Red Plate for another round with a seven point lead over #38 rider who moves into second-place after starting the season in fifth. Jo Shimoda, who won the opening round two weeks ago in Anaheim but broke his fingers last week, continues to ride through pain finishing sixth. He drops to fourth, 13 points from the top spot. Drew Adams made his pro debut and finished eighth.

Supercross begins the trek east this week stopping in Glendale, AZ for Round 4 on Saturday at State Farm Stadium.
