2025 Arlington Supercross Recap
That was a real doozy.
Round 7 of the 2025 Monster Energy Supercross season held Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX featured the second Triple Crown event of the year and with some minor exceptions, all the best racing happened on the final lap of the final 450 class race.
Chase Sexton, tied in points with Cooper Webb entering the round, just needed second place in Race 3 to claim the overall and move forward as sole possessor of the Red Plate. But he wanted the win.
Finishing third in Race 1 and second in Race 2 perhaps he just wanted 3-2-1 finishes for the day! Wait, wait, wait hold the phone! What is a Triple Crown event? Youse gots to do your due diligence when writing these recaps for the 1% who may stumble upon this and not know.
The Triple Crown event takes place three times a year and runs three shortened races - instead of one 20 minute long Main Event in the 450 class and one 15 minute Main Event in the 250 class. Olympic style scoring determines the overall winner. A rider may not win any of the three races but can still claim the overall victory - just as Sexton was about to do and which he did at Glendale.
The start of Race 3 was nearly as chaotic as the end as Shane Mcelrath grabbed the Holeshot, quickly lost the lead to Aaron Plessinger who then rode off the track after squirreling out in the whoops. That put Ken Roczen upfront and he simply needed to hold the lead for his first overall of the season. Sexton was sixth and Webb was seventh at this point.
Jason Anderson, who had no chance at a podium, nonetheless rode hard and got into second in less than two minutes. Sexton made it to third shortly after. With about seven minutes remaining, Sexton passed Anderson for second. At this point, Sexton needed to pass Roczen to claim the overall. He caught up to Roczen with about five minutes left, the two battled briefly, each claiming the lead, until Sexton made it stick with more than four minutes on the clock. This dog fight enabled Webb to settle in right behind them and he eventually got around Roczen for second.
Sexton began to pull away, the Race 3 victory and overall in-hand until he stalled his bike with less than two minutes left. This gave Webb the lead and put Roczen back into second which set up a brief battle between Sexton, Roczen and Anderson. When the dust settled, Sexton held on to second and Roczen dropped to fourth. All Sexton needed to do now was finish second.
But he charged towards Webb and with a handful of corners left before the checkers he tried an awkward pass on a lapper in a berm, a fender's length off Webb's rear fender, hit the turn stiffly and fell over. To add insult to injury, Justin Barcia ran up alongside him right before the finish line in an aggressive pass for fourth. Sexton limped to the finish line in fifth, and third overall.
"I have no idea what happened. That was craziness, that was a lot of lady luck," Webb said of his seventh win at AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. "It was an awesome Main Event. (Sexton) stalled and I actually ended up stalling myself. It was a dual to the end. I felt a little something then the next thing I know I heard the crowd and I was in disbelief like everyone else. There's something about this stadium maybe I'm Jerry's (Jerry Jones owner of Dallas Cowboys) grandson I didn't know about."
Sexton held his head in his hands trackside immediately after the race. He was short and to the point in his post-race interview saying he was embarrassed and what happened won't cut it mentioning he's got a lot of work to do both on the bike and with himself.
The grisly veteran Webb takes a five point lead over (instead of three points behind) Sexton after winning his second straight. Roczen took second overall on a (1-5-3) night.
The 250 West class returned to action after two weekends off and the rider entering the round in third-place for points won the first two races, took second in the third race and got his second overall of the season propelling him into first in the Championship standings.
However, Coty Schock grabbed the headline for Arlington riding 2-4-6 on the night and taking second overall on the tie-breaker over Michael Mosiman. It was a career night for Schock, riding for the Muc-Off / FXR / ClubMX team, which MotoSport sponsored in 2022.
"We're broadcasted as a big team (but) we do a lot with a little," an emotional Schock said. "Thanks to the whole team. It's surreal. I was a nobody growing up. I wasn't that guy, I am now. It was surreal, yeah, we did it."
Mosiman who nearly retired a year ago after breaking his neck, continues to show dramatic improvement from his 15th to start the season, then ninth, seventh, fifth and now third. With that mathematical string, he should win next time out.
Julien Beaumer's lackluster performance dropped him from the points leads to second, six points back of first. His finishes of 6-8-4 gave him sixth overall. Cole Davies, who won two of the first three Triple Crown races at Glendale won Race 3 but fourth in Race 1 and 17th in Race 2 gave him seventh overall.
Jordon Smith, who won the overall at Glendale, went down in the whoops while leading Race 1 after time expired and was taken off the track on a stretcher. No Red Flag and staggered restart? His injuries include four broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a small spleen laceration.
Riders head east for the famed Daytona round at the Daytona International Speedway on Saturday in Daytona Beach, FL, also the ghird round for the 250 East class. West gets another break.
