2025 San Diego Supercross Recap

A good day today!

To write about the return of a Champion. Maybe even the People's Champion.

Hardly the aging veteran, Eli Tomac quickly brushed off a start leaving him in eighth-place and methodically worked (and jumped and railed around the outside) his way up front to win Round 2 of the 2025 Monster Energy season on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, serving notice that age remains just a number. Also perhaps, a statement, that last year was an Achilles heel anomaly and the two-time 450 class Supercross Champ returns not only with a somewhat vengeance but to win but win the whole dang thing.

He was flying on Saturday in some respects, literally, taking massive jumps and blitzing through the whoops. Cooper Webb took the early lead and held more than half the race with Ken Roczen and Hunter Lawrence battling for second. Tomac was third after about three minutes then five minutes later got past Roczen for second. Meanwhile defending champion Jett Lawrence also made moves towards the front.

Just under halfway through the race, Tomac and Lawrence passed Webb simultaneously for first and second, respectively, and both pulled away from the field. Though Lawrence kept Tomac within sight, he never mounted much of a charge to pass the elder statesman. Webb finished third nearly 20 seconds behind the Tomac.

If not for last week's early slip, Tomac would have back-to-back wins. Just as he would have had back-to-back titles if not for that fateful Achilles rupture in the penultimate round of the 2023 season in Denver. That was the last round Tomac rode the Red Plate and next week he rides it again.

Tomac's first win of the young season also rewrote the record book as he became the first rider in Supercross history to stand center podium 11 straight years. Post-race, Tomac said the win, his 53rd, was high on the list of memorable victories.

"It has been a long time since I won one of these 20 minute main events (last year's win was a Triple Crown race) so good to rebound from last weekend," Tomac said "It was a heartbreak there right away in Anaheim. Had to work for that (San Diego victory), made a lot of passes and was able to keep it on two wheels. This feels so good."

Chase Sexton, winner of Anaheim 1, slipped on the first lap going down and starting last. Like Tomac's push towards the front at Round 1 after he fell on the first lap, Sexton picked off riders, salvaged points and finished sixth. He loses the points lead to Tomac, though just by one. Jorge Prado, the 2-time MXGP 450 class Champion (that overseas series) crashed in practice separating his shoulder and ending his night.

In the 250 West class, Jordon Smith grabbed the Holeshot but was quickly outsmarted by Cole Davies who took the lead and quickly followed by Julien Beaumer. The two played cant and mouse for half the race with the rookie Davies holding strong looking for a win. But the second-year rider Beaumer who got his first career podium at Anaheim 1 proved better taking the lead with about eight and half minutes left and easily grabbed the checkers.

"I got off to a good start, just tried to be patient behind Davies. Try to wear him down a little bit and made my move and just tried to run my own race," Beaumer said. "I couldn't be more happy, I'm a little speechless right now. I'm ready to get back to work."

Joe Shimoda, who won the season opener, broke two fingers when he hit a pit board in qualifying. His status to race was up in the air but he not only qualified 7th in his Heat race but managed a seventh in the Main. He loses the points lead, dropping to third but only seven points back of Beaumer. Smith finished second, besting his third-place opening round win and sits five points back from the top spot.

The polarizing phenom Haiden Deegan failed to measure up to expectations for the second straight round, starting inside the Top 10 and finished third. Visibly sullen post-race, Deegan said he was embarrassed by his results and struggled with arm pump. The two-time SuperMotocross Champion and reigning 250 class Motocross Champion sits fourth, 10 points out of first.
