2025 Glendale Supercross Recap

The first Triple Crown event of the 2025 Monster Energy Supercross season gave way to the first two-time winner this season, another Red Plate change and a potential season-altering injury, all in the 450 class.

And Triumph took the top step in the 250 West class.

Round 4 took place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ home to one of the biggest tracks on the circuit. For those not considered core or who don't go around saying things like "You even ride, bro?" the Triple Crown event takes place three times a year and instead of one 20 minute long Main Event in the 450 class and one 15 minute Main Event in the 250 class, three shortened races, using Olympic style scoring, determine the overall winner. So that means a rider may not win any of the three races but can still claim the overall victory, which...

Chase Sexton did.

Going 3-3-2 on the night, Sexton took the win by a point over Cooper Webb for his second win of the year while taking the points lead from Ken Roczen who finished third overall on a 4-1-5 night narrowly edging Eli Tomac for the final podium spot. Tomac endured two bad starts forcing him to race towards the front in the first two races but a heads-down check out in Race #3 gave him the victory and good enough for fourth overall on a 6-4-1 night.

For his part, Sexton had no real chance of winning any of the races. He battled Roczen for a bit in Race 1 before taking third with less than two minutes on the clock. Webb grabbed the Holeshot on that one and checked out. Sexton held off Tomac, who was full-throttled, in Race 2 but had nothing for him in the finale. Roczen grabbed the Holeshot and checked out in Race 2 grabbing his first Triple Crown race win since 2020.

"First two races were chaos and I had to fight real hard to get to a good position to be on the podium, the last race I made a dumb mistake and let Eli get by me," Sexton said. "Honestly, I'm a little bummed I didn't win that last race, I wanted that one. I go the overall win and that's what we're here to do."

Defending Champion Jett Lawrence finished second in the first two races, squirreling all over the place in Race 2 like he was looking for stolen money, nearly crashing as a result. However, in Race 3 he dabbed his right foot just past the Holeshot coming into the second turn which pushed his leg back awkwardly and he immediately rode off the track, his right leg off the peg, the whole thing reminiscent of when Tomac ruptured his Achilles two years ago. Early reports suggest a hyperextended knee with sharp pain but no credible news on the extent of ligament damage, if any.

In the 250 West class, Julien Beamer almost triple-crowned crashing and rookie Cole Davies almost swept but it was veteran Jordon Smith riding a Triumph who got his first win this season putting the motorcycle brand first, for the first time.

Smith went 2-3-1 on the night staying up right the entire evening - crashing last week on the final lap cost him a podium spot - and taking advantage of others' miscues for his fifth career overall.

"It's unbelievable to get the first win for the Triumph brand this early in the career for (them)," Smith said. "Track definitely got very tricky. Those whoops, they didn't touch since this morning they were treacherous. I think a lot of people may have questioned me leaving Star, but I believed in these guys since Day 1. I'm just so happy to be back up here, top step."

Beaumer probably should have won the night but instead made headlines of a different sort. He grabbed the Holeshot in Race 1, fell down on a turn on the first lap and took a whole bunch of riders with him but not before some other rider appeared to give Beaumer a fist full of grip to his back. At any rate, this rather cartoonish pile-up gave Davies the lead where he checked out and won.

In Race 2, Beaumer again grabbed the Holeshot but fell right after the second turn on the opening lap, this time without taking everyone else down. He regrouped last and finished sixth. Davies again took the lead thanks to Beaumer's fall and won again.

So now, Davies should have won the night heading into Race 3 with just two points. (Remember Olympic style scoring!) But he crashed on the opening lap and started waaaaay back. He flew by everyone making it to eighth, enough to secure third overall.

Elsewhere, Jo Shimoda gritted out a 10th overall while nursing two broken fingers and Michael Mosiman took a season best 5th overall including third in Race 3. A broken neck forced him into "retirement" a year ago until the doctor said he was not in any more danger of a life-altering injury had he never broken his neck.

Some other rider finished second overall on a 3-2-4 night, now failing to win in three of the four 250 West contests this year where many expected him take most if not all of them, especially considering the stacked 250 East class.

Speaking of, the 250 East season starts Saturday along with Round 5 for the 450 class at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fl.
