2026 Southwick Motocross Recap

The Coenen brothers returned to race Round 6 of the 2026 Pro Motocross Championship series on Saturday at the sandy confines of Southwick with mixed results but one thing remains sure, Jett Lawrence still flies as the fastest plane at least in the 450 class.

Lawrence, who has taken some arrows in recent weeks thanks to his brother Hunter, found a way to win, thanks to his brother, thus ending Hunter's two-round win overall win streak and took the Red Plate.

Jett grabbed the Holeshot in Moto 1 with Hunter in tow while Lucas Coenen, a master in the sand who leads the MXGP class (450) overseas in the MXGP series, fell on the first turn and resumed way back of the pack. Fifteen minutes later, Coenen was fifth while Hunter closed in on Jett. With about 11 minutes left, Coenen was fourth and Jett built a two second gap over Hunter. Then...

Jett crashed. Similar to RedBud when Hunter went down while leading in Moto 1 giving Jett the win, the reverse occurs at Southwick. Jett suffered his first moto loss at Southwick in his 450 career. With about three minutes left, however, Coenen went over the bars after a jump ending his race. He did not line up for Moto 2 as a precaution considering he's got bigger fish to fry overseas.

A Red Flag was thrown on the last lap ending the race after Christian Craig went down but Hunter had the win locked up. Jett finished second.

Hunter grabbed the Holeshot in Moto 2, a 450 class rookie in second and Jett third who made an easy pass for second about eight minutes into the race. A few attempts at the lead proved futile though as Hunter held his own but with about five minutes remaining, the eldest Lawrence in the lead, went over the bars when he bumped neutral. Luckily for him a small crash but Hunter finished fourth, lost the overall and points lead. Jett easily took the win and overall for his fourth straight overall victory at Southwick.

"Obviously got lucky with (Hunter) going down. We'll take it," said the younger Lawrence who continues to manage a now healed fractured talus and navicular bone in his right ankle suffered in December which kept him from competing in Supercross. "It's a difficult track. I knew this was going to be the hardest one on my foot so to get away with a win I'm definitely happy."

In the 250 class, Sascha Coenen showed why he leads the MX2 class (250) in the MXGPs with a pummeling of the field in both Motos, however, with some potentially disastrous results.

In Moto 1, Coenen quickly grabbed the lead from Cole Davies on the first lap and checked out. Won by 33 seconds. His post-race comment?

"I was riding good, I think."

OK then. The Coenen brothers might leave the MXGPs for Motocross in the states next year and the display Sascha certainly helps in the decision making process. However, he still has a championship to fight for overseas and his crash in Moto 2 might affect his title aspirations.

Again, leading by a wide margin, Coenen crashed hard with about four minutes on the clock, remounted with the lead intact sans his goggles and then proceeded to build a wide gap again on Davies who was second.

However, Coenen was seen favoring his right arm and wrist postrace and later his shoulder then he skipped the podium interview. Some reports indicate broken collarbone. No word on the extent of his injuries but a resounding sweep at Southwick looks good on paper but could backfire for a championship run. Sascha also dominated Moto 2 at Thunder Valley in Round 3. The crashes for both Coenens might put a stop on them racing a planned third round in the Pro Motocross series before the season ends.

As for the title contenders, Davis crashed with about 17 minutes left in Moto 1 while securely in second and had trouble getting his bike started. He fell to 10th and worked his way to seventh but that opened the door for Levi Kitchen (2-4) who took second and in Moto 2 finished fourth for second overall. Davies (7-2) took third overall.

Jo Shimoda who entered the round in first place, crashed during qualifying breaking his collarbone. With Shimoda out, Davies takes the Red Plate by two points over Kitchen. He follows Seth Hammaker who also held the points lead earlier this season before succumbing to injury.
