2026 Washougal Motocross Recap
The Lawrence show continues for the 2026 Pro Motocross Championship series as the brothers each took a Moto win for Round 8 on Saturday at Washougal but this time a penalty affected the overall.
When one seems destined for the Moto win, he crashes, enabling his brother (usually) in second to capitalize. So it goes with Jett and Hunter Lawrence in the 450 class. This time, Jett dominated Moto 1 with Hunter second. In Moto 2, it was Hunter quickly in the lead with Jett, who grabbed the Holeshot, on the move towards the front until he went off track. Race officials determined Jett accelerated while off track thus imposed a one position penalty.
Jett eventually caught Hunter with about 13 minutes on the clock the two briefly exchanging leads before Hunter proved the victor, even if temporary. A minute and a half later Jett made the pass and pulled away. But as long as Hunter stayed up right and in second, the overall belonged to him because of the penalty.
And he did, but Jett did not. Two minutes later Jett crashed somewhere over there, i.e. suddenly Hunter was leading by 10 seconds. Hunter mostly sailed home for the win, though Jett tried a last lap pursuit, and a career best at Washougal.
"What a day. Wild Moto," said Hunter who has won seven of the last 10 Motos and notched his sixth overall for the season. "My start was terrible in the first one got it better in the second one. We ran a paddle tire all day today. Doesn't make sense but it works."
Instead of tying in points for the day, the penalty dropped Jett (1-3) to third for Moto 2 though he retained second overall, giving Hunter (2-1) two points to his lead in the standings.
250 Class
Give it up for Levi Kitchen. Like his predecessors this season in the 250 class, Kitchen tried handing the Red Plate over and though he managed to leave healthy his points lead shrank like a frightened turtle.
Kitchen who grew up a short dirt bike ride from Washougal MX rode the Red Plate for the first time at his home track but it was Cole Davies (1-1) who stole the show. A dominating ride for both Motos put the momentum back in Davies' corner after last week's disaster which included a DNF thanks to a hole in his gas tank after he got caught up in a first turn crash.
This time Kitchen got pinched from a pileup just after the Holeshot in Moto 1 leaving him to start near the back of the pack. A career ride for sure from Kitchen who raced back to sixth. Davies won by 17 seconds over Ryder DiFrancesco (2-2) who held down second the whole way. Chance Hymas (3-3) third.
The same riders going 1-2-3 for Moto 2 though a twinge more difficult for Davies who started fourth and needed three minutes to get around DiFrancesco who grabbed the Holeshot. Hymas kept it in third for the distance.
"After last weekend I know I had to step up my game. Obviously I had a good day today," said Davies who had never raced Washougal before. "Made up a lot of points. I'm stoked. We did some testing on suspension and really feel like we made a step in the right direction. Track was sketchy you just tuck the front everywhere. It was good had a fun day."
Davies sweep pulled him to within seven points of Kitchen who finished fifth overall on a (6-6) day. Julien Beaumer (8-5), who won last week at Spring Creek and pulled to within 24 points of Kitchen in second, finished sixth overall and drops behind Davies to third in the standings. Kitchen leaves with the Red Plate, a goal of his coming into the round, and his body intact. Perhaps he squashed the injury reaper which has ruined title aspirations for several of those leading in points this season.
Riders get two weeks off before the final stretch of the Motocross season begins August 15 at Unadilla. Wait! What am I supposed to do? I write almost nothing but Motocross recaps anymore. I guess I'll go ask AI.
