2025 Pittsburgh Supercross Recap
Nerves of steel, perhaps and quite apropos, as Championship contenders proved their grit for Round 15 of the 2025 Monster Energy Supercross series on Saturday in Pittsburgh at Acrisure Stadium.
Forty-two long years since the Steel City hosted a Supercross round and in two weeks, two riders just might say, "I won the Championship in Pittsburgh."
Cooper Webb put his money where his mouth is or at least where it wasn't last week by grabbing the Holeshot, looked back a couple of times (probably) but never lost the lead and ultimately held off a faster Chase Sexton to secure his fifth win.
"It's been a heck of a fight that was rough for two weeks especially last week," Webb said. "It was an incredible main event, we were going for it and if I made one little mistake I knew he was going to get me so you want to talk about pressure that was a lot. To lead every lap with that kind of pressure is not easy to do."
The win ended Sexton's two-race win streak drops him 12 points back and gives Webb breathing room heading into the final two rounds. Webb has placed off the podium twice this season so even finishing the year placing third in the final two rounds, with Sexton winning both, the two-time champ addsa a third to his resume.
Sexton who dismantled Webb and the field the previous week said Webb didn't make a mistake the whoile race. Sexton bobbled in the whoops with about 11 minutes to go which sent him off the track and gave Webb a cushion but Sexton hung on and got back into the chase getting near Webb's fender with about 5 minutes left, but ultimately unable to let his faster pace capitalize.
Elsewhere, Justin Cooper, winner of his Heat race, finished third, his first podium of the year after multiple visits to fourth-place. Ken Roczen rode well with his shoulder and ankle injuries but ultimately faded from third to sixth. Aaron Plessinger took fourth and Malcolm Stewart made an aggressive last lap pass on Roczen to secure fifth.
In the 250 East class, defending Champion Tom Vialle, without a win this season, who finished last during the mud fest in Foxborough, yet only faced a seven point deficit entering the round, still kind of needed a win.
And he got one.
Vialle became the seventh different winner in the 250 East class this year overtaking Nate Thrasher, who took the Holeshot and led up until then, with a minute left on the clock and pulled away. His win, RJ Hampshire's fourth-place and Seth Hammaker's fifth sets up a winner take all finale in Salt Lake City.
"Coming to this round I pretty much had to win, that feels really good," Vialle said. "I had a pretty big crash in practice, I hit my head pretty bad, but we bounced back. The track was tough tonight but I had good lines. This one feels good I am looking to have the chance to fight for the title in Salt Lake City."
Hammaker salvaged a bad start followed by an awkward squirreling out in the whoops which he saved then he hit a tuff block on the first lap. He dropped to 17th, almost got landed on later by Hardy Munoz then rode with angels to fifth. Hampshire crashed with two minutes remaining while in third which gave the final podium spot to Max Vohland who gratefully accepted for a career best finish.
Vialle rides the Red Plate heading into the final round in two weeks just a point ahead of Hammaker and three points in front of Hampshire. The winner take all scenario sets-up a potential thriller for the East /West Showdown with the three no doubt leaving nothing on the track.
The penultimate round brings the 250 West class to action on Saturday in Denver
