2025 East Rutherford Supercross Recap

Pass out some easy buttons!

Two riders embraced completely normal weather to effortlessly grab the checkers for Round 14 of the Monster Energy Supercross season on Saturday at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ setting up a possible Championship battle for the ages.

Like two weeks ago in Foxborough, riders faced a mudder two years ago the last time Metlife hosted a Supercross round. But a balmy afternoon with golden sunshine ended this year's streak of cold wet conditions removing all excuses from the table for riders.

Chase Sexton needs to win out to catch Cooper Webb and secure his second 450 class title and if his win on Saturday indicated anything - he can do it. Fifteen points out after finishing sixth in the mudder at Foxborough, Sexton followed up his win in Philadelphia last week with a most dominating wire-to-wire victory in a complete dismantling of Webb who never had a chance.

At one point, Sexton led by more than 18 seconds methodically extending his lead after grabbing the Holeshot ahead of Webb who had no real chance at the lead and by the end of the first lap, the Night Show was over. Sexton enjoyed a 5-second lead after five minutes, an 8-second lead after eight minutes, and finally more than an 18-second lead with five minutes remaining. He won by 16 seconds, most certainly dialing it back once fate was obvious.

"I felt good all day. The two whoops sections helped me out a ,ot. I really felt like I made up a lot of time up there," Sexton said "I had such a good flow in that Moto and it really just felt like it was effortless to me which is what we want. I'm stoked, fifth win of the season, just trying to keep truckin'."

Webb said it was mind blowing how Sexton dominated the whoops, admitted defeat and said he didn't put his money where his mouth was.

Aaron Plessinger grabbed the podium for the fourth time in the last five rounds after Justin Barcia endo-ed coming out of the whoops and went over the handlebars. Up until then, Barcia, winner of the 2023 round at East Rutherford, had held off the aggressive Plessinger lap after lap as the two vied for third. Barcia resumed racing after heading to the pits to fix the handlebars and finished 18th. Justin Cooper took fourth and Dylan Ferrandis rounded out the Top 5.

In troubling news, Jerry Robin, that guy who rode the Honda 85, crashed in qualifying and reported on Instagram having paralysis from the bellybutton down. Fervent prayers for one of my early interviewees.

At any rate, results in the 250 East class echoed the same story as the 450s.

Nate Thrasher grabbed the Holeshot but that didn't last long as Seth Hammaker quickly passed RJ Hampshire after the start, a turn later grabbed the lead and never looked back eventually winning by six seconds. Thrasher later hit the dirt, surrendering second place to Hampshire and dropping Vialle into third the same positions in which the race ended and the current points standings.

Hammaker, who became the first two-time winner in the East and broke a points tie with Hampshire, now rides the Red Plate alone for the first time in his career.

"I got sick on Tuesday night into Wednesday and it put another thing coming into the weekend but we have a great group of people around me," Hammaker said. "It did creep into my mind a little bit but thankfully I was able to put in consistent laps. It feels really good to get another win."

Vialle, the reigning Champion, falls seven points back with two rounds remaining and Hampshire three points back. Cullin Park finished fourth and sits fourth while Thrasher, docked a position late in the race, finished fifth also in fifth for the standings. Though remote, both remain in contention for the 250 East title.

East Coast love continues as Supercross heads to Pittsburgh on Saturday at Acrisure Stadium before the final two rounds out West.
