2026 Detroit Supercross Recap
Hunter Lawrence appeared ready to run away with the 450 Supercross title then he lost a 50/50 bet in the whoops.
In some respects, Round 11 of the 2026 Monster Energy Supercross series in Detroit at Ford Field looked more like freestyle MX at times with some notable spills and one near crash that would have made national sport channels highlight reels but that's the way that lady luck dances.
In the 450 class, Jorge Prado grabbed the Holeshot, again, the fifth time this season and also the fifth time he gave the lead up rather fast. Ken Roczen embraced the old clich pinned it to win it and indeed, the veteran outpaced everyone. Facing a 31 point deficit in the points standings, Roczen needed a break to get back into championship contention and a win was part of it.
"This was a tough main event," said Roczen, who had never won in Detroit. "I was definitely not the fastest in the beginning. I was playing a little bit with the track. I knew they were gaining on me so I switched out my rhythms. I wasn't necessarily lighting on the world on fire but the track is so tough. The whoops, in the end, is a 50/50 chance you're going to make it through or you're going to be on your back. I am so fricking excited (but) we still have a lot of racing to go."
Near the midpoint of the race, those odds claimed Hunter Lawrence who had won three of the previous four and held a nine point lead over a tumbling Eli Tomac. Lawrence started outside the Top 5 and bested Tomac in a brief battle for seventh early on. Upfront, Prado was second, Chase Sexton third and a fourth-place Cooper Webb got around Sexton for third after just a few laps.
At the 18 minute mark, Webb tried passing Prado in a corner berm sending both to the ground. Lawerence took third, Malcom Stewart bumped to fourth and Tomac fifth. Racing settled a bit as riders seemed locked into place for the long haul then at the 11 minute mark, Lawrence swapped as he finished a set of whoops only to get tossed into the dirt at the end. A hard crash on him and the bike as he struggled to not only start the bike but once he got going the front brake decided enough was enough and wanted to go home.
Lawrence fell once more, expressed some anger on the front brake lever with his boot and rode to the pits. A quick adjustment got Lawrence back on the track in 19th yet 10 minutes remained.
So now, Roczen, Sexton, Stewart and Tomac lead the way with Tomac and Roczen in prime position to close the points gap on Lawrence. Roczen succeeded, Tomac not so much. The two-time champion's once promising season has taken a turn in recent weeks. Some say the season starts at Daytona, as for this year, maybe that's where Tomac's ended. He won there earlier this month but hasn't capitalized on that momentum.
Tomac never made a push towards Stewart and with about four minutes left, let Justin Cooper pass with no effort. Now fifth, Tomac mostly rode around as his primary opponent struggled way behind him. Lawrence fell again with two minutes left and the bleeding stopped at 18th. Finally, Tomac held off a charging Webb and finished fifth.
Rather than a sweeping points turnaround, Tomac's struggles mitigated the damage for Lawrence as Tomac managed to get the Red Plate, only by four points. Roczen cut his deficit in half, he now sits 14 points behind Tomac and 10 points back of Lawrence.
250 east Class
If you watched the 250 East class on TV you watched something perhaps never seen before: A rider going so fast the tape looked sped up.
Cole Davies was unreal. Starting a miserable 15th, Davies, winner of two-straight, hit the top 10 after a minute, and a minute after that Nate Thrasher, who grabbed the Holeshot and looked to checkout, crashed. He, too, lost the whoops' bet with an endo near the end and his dirt bike had the last word as it pummeled Thrasher's body.
Seth Hammaker took the lead with Jo Shimoda second and less than four minutes in, Davies was third. Now for the crazy near miss that could have gone horribly south:
Devin Simonson and Coty Schock hit a jump together even if a little too close for comfort which sent Simonson to his right off the track into an opposing lane of traffic. Thankfully no riders were headed his way and Simonson, seemingly riding with angels, landed without incident, turned around and resumed racing finishing 19th as he would later crash in the whoops.
The whoops almost took Davies too as his bike squirreled a bit in one instance, however, as he approached Hammaker for the lead with about six minutes on the clock, his ride through the whoops looked like someone doubled the tape speed. Like an effortless horse jockey who lets his steed do all the work, Davies powered through grabbed the lead and eventually the checkers.
"When I don't perform I'm pretty hard on myself," said Davies, who won by 12 seconds. "I am stoked with the that Main Event that's how I know I can ride. Put everything together well, I didn't have a good start and I made it happen. I'm stoked with that."
Davies increased his lead over Hammaker to nine in the 250 East points standings. Hammaker survived a nasty get-off in his Heat race (see photos) to not only qualify but snag a runner-up in the Main. Shimoda was gifted third after Schock mishandled the whoops and rode into a track tower with Shimoda in pursuit behind him. Schock missed out on his second career podium but remounted in time to get fourth.
The second of three East / West Showdowns highlights the 250 class on Saturday at The Dome at America's Center in St. Louis.
