2026 Daytona Supercross Recap
Different bike, another year, the same Eli.
Already King of Daytona, Eli Tomac proved again the famed racetrack built on the infield of the Daytona International Speedway belongs to him.
Adding to his record 450 class wins at the venue, Tomac faced few hurdles in taking his 8th Daytona Supercross on Saturday representing Round 8 of the 2026 Monster Energy Supercross season in Daytona Beach, FL. It was also his fourth win this year - no one else has more than one.
Tomac started fourth behind Hunter Lawrence who grabbed the Holeshot and dropped to second near the Finish Line jump when Ken Roczen took the lead. Defending Champion Cooper Webb rolled out in third. Tomac disposed of Webb in less than two minutes and the three lead-riders held a furious pace. With about 14 minutes on the clock Roczen, Lawrence and Tomac started to bunch up and a minute later Tomac went up the inside in a berm on Lawrence (wait, technical difficulties!? Kind of sort of the same but not really, but imagine the screen going black just prior to a receiver catching the football in the endzone) and made the pass for second. Yes, the screen went black right at the moment Tomac made the pass. Classic Peacock. At least the background church bells no longer cut through the audio.
A clean aggressive pass and a minute after that Tomac handled Roczen and had little trouble taking the Daytona Checkers for the eighth time.
"They're all awesome," said Tomac, 33, of his wins. "Somehow, I've won eight of these and I don't really want to think about how old I am. I just go out there, I roost the berms like I'm at my home track. I love this (Daytona) dirt, I love the way this track develops."
Tomac also moved into second-place all-time for premier class points. Tomac said Daytona, a mostly hybrid Supercross / Motocross track, requires lots of patience to figure out where to make your next move.
"I knew I had some good momentum to really attack and there's so many places where you can make time here," he said.
Behind him, Roczen ultimately got held up by a lapper and lost second to Lawrence who came on strong a couple of times for the lead but ultimately had nothing for Tomac and never made much of a threat. Roczen held on for third.
250 East class
It looked easy for Seth Hammaker in the 250 East class but a qualifying crash earlier in the day almost ended his night. He rebounded from a hard hit on the track to grab the Holeshot and check out.
"Unreal," he said. "Had a big (crash) and I feel like it really tests you mentally how you come back form that. Proud of the effort tonight. The team crushed it tonight. Super cool to get a win at Daytona. It's an unreal feeling."
Widely considered a title contender, Hammaker finished second last year in the 250 East class just three points back of Tom Vialle and finished fourth at the opener in Arlington after getting caught up in a first turn crash. The Daytona win pops him into second-place just two points back of Pierce Brown who finished third.
Brown finished ahead of Jo Shimoda, again, this time a result of a late-race crash. Shimoda had second locked until he muffed it in the sand. That allowed Cole Davies to pass for second and Brown in third. Too bad for Shimoda as he'd get the Red Plate but instead drops to third five points back. Brown retains his lead in the standings.
(A major brew-ha-ha resulted in Arlington with the use of red lights, lead-in lights and Red Cross flags. There was much ado about quite a bit actually and arguably someone screwed up somewhere that may or may not have affected the outcome of the 250 class race and not reduced points for riders in the 450 class.)
Drew Adams hung around up front for much of the race than left the track with about two minutes to go. Jalek Swoll finished eighth but got docked two spots for "grooming in front of the gate" during the site lap, an apparent no-no. Weird, wild stuff.
Indianapolis hosts Round 9 and the second Triple Crown event on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
