2026 San Diego Supercross Recap
Eli Tomac made it two-straight to open the 2026 Monster Energy Supercross season, staving off a final lap attempt to pass from Hunter Lawrence, and increased his points lead in the 450 class.
Tomac, Lawrence and Ken Roczen led the field for Round 2 on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego as Lawrence grabbed the Holeshot, Roczen a close second and Tomac third. Roczen and Lawrence initially looked to pull away from Tomac in the early laps of the race but when Roczen grabbed the lead after six minutes - blazing through the whoops - the veteran seemed destined for a win.
But a turn nor two later, Tomac got around Lawrence for second and snuggled behind Roczen then passing for the lead about a minute or so later. Roczen wanted nothing of it and 30 seconds later retook the lead, Tomac made a bobbly mistake and Roczen built a gap. The two upfront remained there with about five minutes remaining when Tomac made his second pass for the lead and with lappers all around managed to make it stick. Roczen lost some of his edge as Lawrence took the inside line on a berm easily passing for second.
Lawrence, in his third year and yet to win a 450 class Supercross round, started to reel in Tomac and came close on the final lap, as an apparently surprised Tomac rolled the throttle a bit more after Lawrence showed a wheel and held on for the win, his 55th.
"(Ken and I) had an unbelievable battle there and once we went back and forth and I finally got into the lead thought I was in a really good groove," Tomac said. "And then towards the end, not paying attention, I didn't know Hunter was there I was so focused on marking Kenny around the track. I go over the tunnel the last lap and hear Hunter revving his bike so I feel very fortunate to end up holding on to the lead. I need some better self-awareness, I guess, next time. Another great night but that was close."
Lawrence's runner-up was a career best and puts him into the Top 3 in the championship standings. Chase Sexton jumped the gate and hit the crossbar but managed a fourth-place with a mad dash to the front after being last at the first turn. Joey Savatgy rounded out the Top 5.
Elsewhere, Malcolm Stewart finished 10th one week after a harrowing crash, involving Justin Barcia on the opening lap, dislocated his shoulder. Defending Champion Cooper Webb crashed after Sexton cut him off for a pass, dropping from sixth to ninth. Webb finished eighth. Jorge Prado, third last week, a distant 13th in San Diego. Barcia sat out this round.
250 West Class
Max Anstie was going for two-straight to open the season after grabbing the Holeshot until his teammate, also the defending champion, undercut him in a berm and dropped him to the floor at the nine minute mark. Rather than a clean pass for the lead, leaving Anstie in second, the spill dropped the Anaheim 1 winner to fifth and second in the standings.
"That was impressive. I actually genuinely didn't want to play the game and I know who I'm racing against but fair play," Anstie said postrace with a tone of sarcasm. "Straight upI'm a big boy that's fine, no problem. I didn't expect that - down like a sack of potatoes. It is what it is, we'll come back. Fair play though, that was impressive I thought I was a big enough guy to stay out of the way, but fair play."
Cameron Mcadoo, who has endured his share of injuries in recent years, likely endeared many fans with his comments after securing second, a week after finishing last at Anaheim, also sort of because of the antics of the defending champion.
"I didn't expect to get 22nd last weekend and end up in B practice this morning," said Mcadoo who tore his ACL before the start of the 250 East class and only raced two full rounds before calling it a season. "I had something to prove for myself. It has been a long time. This stuff is trying and I always pride myself on being able to come back and respond to a long time off the bike. Tonight was pretty special. Been a long time since I blew my lungs out like that for a full 15. I'm just a kid from Iowa living my dream and I'm just really grateful I keep getting to do this.
Michael Mosiman finished third.
Levi Kitchen crashed again at the start and worked his way to fourth. Chance Hymas saved an arguably near season-ending crash (and maybe worse) when he almost endo-ed off a jump and used the Tuff Blocks as collateral to prevent from going off the track. He lost a podium spot but carried on with the season taking sixth.
