2026 Fox Raceway Motocross Recap

The perpetual bridesmaid says "Now it's my turn to get a ring!"

Hunter Lawrence, fresh off a heartbreaking second-place finish in the 2026 Supercross championship, brought a broom to Round 1 of the 2026 Pro Motocross season. Not to clean up after Ken Roczen's Supercross Championship party, but to sweep the competition, dominating Fox Raceway on Saturday in Pala, California, with two Moto wins.

Lawrence's primary battle? Not Roczen but Jorge Prado. The two-time MXGP Champ in his second season racing in the states swept the twos (2-2) including a brief spot out front in Moto 2 before Lawrence reeled him in and rode away for the win. Mostly easy wins for Lawrence - at least in terms of easy in racing dirt bikes for nearly 90 minutes in warm sun - who seems to have made a statement that this year he wants his ring and not remembered as the Australian Marvin Musquin.

Or at least a really big trophy at the end of the year.

"It was fun, that was good, a great day. Perfect day," said Lawrence who also qualified first and grabbed a Holeshot while taking his first career sweep. "Just every session on track. That was awesome. Just fired up, thanks to the crowd, everyone was awesome, great weather... racing dirt bikes. Epic."

Round 1 in the books but the guy always seemingly standing in Lawrence's way for the top spot on the podium, well, he returned after missing all of Supercross from a broken foot. Brother Jett did not win on this day but he didn't look hobbled either. Jett Lawrence (4-3) got third overall and he did get a moral victory, of sorts. If it even matters to him.

Lawrence won the battle between the media- and (even) self-appointed titans of MX. Both Lawrence and the 250 West Supercross Champ, now a rookie in the 450 class, (and yes, still waiting on the revocation of the verbal cease and desist order to not talk about him by name levied early last year by his camp) overcame bad starts in Moto 1 to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, with the 250 guy besting Lawrence briefly until the defending 450 class Motocross Champion passed him back and held on to the lead. Both were fender and fender for a bit in Moto 2 but Lawrence proved again superior in the second race taking third to the other guy's fourth.

Still, a pretty good day for the rookie and Lawrence returning from a significant injury to post Top 5 results. And, don't forget Justin Cooper (3-6). Seemingly always quiet yet right there in fourth overall.

Unfortunate and almost catastrophic day for four-time champ Eli Tomac. An injury riddled second half of Supercross ended his chance at an Indoor title after a strong start to that season as he held the Red Plate for a while and now already his Outdoor season features a big question mark. On the first lap in Moto 1 Garrett Marchbanks hopped off a berm and slam-sidled into Tomac sending both to the ground.

Marchbanks somehow resumed racing after a face plant but Tomac needed help off the track. No broken bones but a neck strain, and if you saw replays, probably a significant strain. One angle showed the top of Tomac's head sliding along the ground like a bowling bowl headed towards the pins. A crash in Cleveland a month ago kept Tomac out a couple of Supercross rounds and another crash in Salt Lake City ruined the finale. Freak accidents and injuries so far have completely derailed a promising start to the 2026 racing season for the aging veteran.

250 Class

Seth Hammaker (2-1), who also ended the Supercross 250 East season in second place, made a statement of his own grabbing his first career Moto win and Overall.

It didn't look good for him to get any type of win after grabbing the Holeshot in Moto 1 then holding the lead for 20 minutes he went off track which handed the front position to Levi Kitchen who raced to the checkers from there.

In Moto 2, Julien Beaumer grabbed the Holeshot, and Michael Mosiman dropped to the ground after a poor attempt at passing second-place Hammaker on the first lap, causing a small pile-up involving Kitchen who resumed waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back of the pack. So, a (2-2) day for Hammaker gives him the overall. But Hammaker caught Beaumer near the midway point and completed the pass with less than 15 minutes on the clock and easily held on for the Moto 1 and overall.

"That's probably the easiest its going to feel. What a day," said Hammaker who suffered a torn trapezius (a torn what?! Let's just call it a back muscle) three weeks ago at Salt Lake Supercross. "The last couple of laps, getting the two-lap board just didn't feel real. Super stoked! I pulled two pretty good starts and rode solid all day. Unreal way to start the year and get my first Pro Motocross win, it's so awesome."

Rookie Caden Dudney (6-4) who took home Rookie of the Year honors in Supercross despite being pulled from racing to focus in Motocross after so-so results finished second overall (it worked!). Cole Davies, 250 East Supercross Champ, took third overall on a (3-8) day.

Well, well, well, Kitchen almost got on the podium. Championships built on your worst day, Kitchen made it to 13th for fourth overall, losing on a three-way tie-breaker for second overall to Davis and Dudney but because of the Moto 1 win, Kitchen sits second in the 250 class standings.

Title contender Max Anstie had a big qualifying crash and pulled off in Moto 1 and did not line up for Moto 2. He's sore not broken and expects to line up at Hangtown. Jo Shimoda took fourth in Moto 1 thanks to a last lap pass on Nick Romano (5-11) and finished sixth overall with a (4-7) day. Beaumer (11-2) claimed the Top 5 on the tie-breaker over Shimoda.
