2026 Hangtown Motocross Recap

Jett Lawrence apparently can't walk but he certainly can ride.

Still ailing from a fractured talus and navicular bone in his right ankle suffered in December which kept him from competing in Supercross, Lawrence looks no worse for the wear and fully equipped to defend his 2025 Motocross title even if he limps to the podium for interviews.

A resounding Round 2 sweep for the 2026 Pro Motocross season on Saturday at the Hangtown Classic in Rancho Cordova, CA gave Lawrence his first Moto win and overall on the young season. Lawrence bested his brother Hunter who swept the opening round and settled for a (2-2) day.

Jett Lawrence capitalized on good starts for both Motos and eventually pulled a large gap in both races for easy wins. Hunter looked poised to take the lead in Moto 2 but as soon as he made a creep towards the front, his brother poured on the gas and sprinted away. Injury or no injury, Lawrence wins even if he hobbles around off the bike.

It was his 19th career sweep and Lawrence said in that Moto 2 he saved energy for the first 15 minutes then did a quick sprint to break Hunter's rhythm then get a gap so his brother couldn't latch on.

"It worked out not too bad," said Lawrence who opened the season with a third overall. "I had some sketchy moments but it was good. I'm glad to be back."

And as usual, Hunter Lawrence tried but had nothing to battle and pass his brother so despite his resounding win last week once again he plays bridesmaid to Jett. Hunter actually held a robust lead in the second Moto but after two minutes the race was red flagged for Justin Cooper who crashed hard after hitting Mikkel Haarup's downed bike.

The 2026 250 Supercross West Champion in his 450 Motocross rookie season finished third overall on a (3-3) day getting his first podium in the premier class but the much-hyped rider was mostly an afterthought despite holding off Hunter Lawrence for 25 minutes in Moto 1 until he had nothing left in the tank and got swallowed by Lawrence's dust.

Dylan Ferrandis pulled a (4-6) day for fourth overall and Garrett Marchbanks (6-5) avoided getting hit by a riderless bike in the pits after Moto 1 to round out the Top 5. Bad luck for Jorge Prado (36-13), who took second overall in the opening round but suffered bike problems while fourth on the last lap in Moto 1. He took a miserable 17th overall and dropped from second to seventh in the standings.

250 Class

In the 250 class, Seth Hammaker (1-9) continued his hot start with a resounding Moto 1 victory, making it look every bit routine. Unfortunately, he got tangled in a first turn pile-up in Moto 2 dropping him to 28th.

That opened the door for Levi Kitchen (2-2), who looked every bit a title contender and worked his way into second from OK starts in both Motos for his first overall in nearly two years.

"A little luck was on my side getting a bad start (in Moto 2)," he said. "I stayed out of the carnage. It's been a long time since I won. It just feels good and takes a little weight off my shoulders."

Cole Davies (11-1) checked out for Moto 2 helping negate the points wounds from a crash less than a minute into Moto 1 that dropped him from second to 11th. Davies missed out on a podium though as Hammaker raced to ninth in Moto 2 to secure the points needed for third overall. Julien Beaumer whose future looked in doubt after crashing at the first round of the SMX Playoffs in September resulting in a burst fracture of his L3 vertebra and fractures to his L2 and L4 vertebrae, finished second overall taking the tie-breaker over Hammaker on a (4-3) day. Jo Shimoda (3-6) rounded out the Top 5.

Motocross begins the trek east first stopping on the high grounds of Thunder Valley on Saturday in Colorado.
