2025 Spring Creek Motocross Recap
If a feel-good movie out of Hollywood featured an "aging" Motocrosser, who rode off into the sunset by winning his final race on the track he was "born" on, most would file it under, soooooo stupid.
Well, it happened.
All eyes on Jeremy Martin in his farewell race. The two-time 250 class champion from what feels like a lifetime ago, never made the transition to the 450 class and Supercross titles eluded him as injuries hampered his track presence in the latter days of his career while he mounted comeback after comeback.
Coming out of mostly semi-retirement this year to race Outdoors for the season ended at Round 2 but he suited up one last time for Round 7 of the 2025 Pro Motocross Championship series on Saturday at Spring Creek in Millville, MN.
And perhaps he might reconsider those plans.
He got the Unsponsored Holeshot in Moto 1. Awesome. Check. If this was the only highlight, a great high note to end on. His lead lasted maybe 90 seconds when Seth Hammaker (27-39) passed. Martin's hold on second lasted a minute when another rider (1-2) passed. But Hammaker crashed 30 seconds later putting Martin back into second.
Jo Shimoda (2-4), on fire in recent weeks and coming off a sweep at RedBud, passed Martin with about 11 minutes on the clock. He and that other rider battled a bit up front, Shimoda succumbing to the runner-up position after several laps with the lead. Martin meanwhile held firm and finished third.
Martin again grabbed the Unsponsored Holeshot for Moto 2, spent six minutes or so fending off Shimoda before relinquishing the lead. Mikkel Haarup (4-3) of Denmark making his presence known in the United States this season wanted second and came close but the veteran Martin outlasted and held his own.
With about 18 minutes on the clock, a low-flying Shimoda went off track, lost the lead to Martin and signaled to his mechanic. His rear brake out, Shimoda faded to fourth. That left Martin along up front. Perhaps understanding the moment or he doesn't really need to retire, Martin checked out. He won his first Moto in nearly four years.
"I was on rails," he said. "I was weed whacking all these hills this summer. I had five days on the Star Racing Yamaha before I came to race here. I had a (feces) two to three last years. It's been really, really bad with a lot of injuries and I'm just so grateful for everyone who has helped me throughout my career."
In the waning laps, everyone in Millville, it seemed, urged Martin to the checkers. Mechanics for other riders posted notes on their pit boards as he passed, fans towel-waved him forward. But in reality, Martin had this one sewn up. He fought the good fight and was about to finish the race.
"This is the drug that I'm talking about. When you retire, I struggle. You fans cheering me on out there. It's something we all crave, everyone who has been in this sport knows what it feels like, thank you guys so much," Martin said to a crowd whose decibel levels of celebration rivaled that of a Metallica concert. "My parents have built this (Spring Creek MX Park) up for 37 years. This is our blood, sweat and tears into this. Seeing you guys line all these hillsides right now you have no idea what this means."
For the day, Martin (3-1) finished second overall.
450 class
In the 450 class, nothing rose to the level of the 250 class in terms of reporting a full race recap. However, Jett Lawrence (2-1) won the overall remaining undefeated for the season, his brother Hunter Lawrence (1-2) finally got a Moto win, Chase Sexton (3-3) hasn't given up and Eli Tomac (6-9), by all appearances, swapped hauling the mail earlier this season for mailing it in.
Motocross returns to the west coast for Round 8 on Saturday at the Washougal National.
