2025 High Point Motocross Recap
A wild day of weather from sun to rain - then an almost mudder - but even with lightning in the distance shortening one race, the points leaders continued winning and extended their leads in the 2025 Pro Motocross Championship Series.
Round 4 held Saturday at High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, PA began a string of dates "back east" hitting the East coast and Midwest area which this time of year sometimes brings weather. Balmy temperatures held up for much of the day but a downpour for Moto 2 in the 450 class, sometimes raining
Jett Lawrence, who leads the 450 class in points, grabbed the Unsponsored Holeshot (600,000 reasons why) and looked on-pace to win. Just like most Saturdays. Then he stalled with about 19 minutes left. His four second lead over Aaron Plessinger evaporated and he fell to third behind his brother Hunter Lawrence.
A self-inflicted wound he quickly repaired. Two minutes later he passed his brother for second and he needed less than 10 minutes to take the lead back. Plessinger still looking for a career 450 Moto win must have expended his energy trying to stay up front as he gave up second to Hunter Lawrence and had a battle with Justin Cooper for third that culminated on the last lap as the two swapped positions for the final podium spot - all the while Eli Tomac who started 10th, was right behind in fifth. Ultimately, the three crossed the checkers in succession a bike length between them - Plessinger, Cooper and Tomac.
In Moto 2, rain dumped just after the gatedrop as Hunter Lawrence grabbed the Unsponsored Holeshot but Tomac quickly got the lead and for the most part checked out. His speed on display in Moto 1 that helped him into fifth from a bad start resumed and he was well on his way to total domination in and out of the rain - depending on where he was on the track.
Jett Lawrence started outside the Top 10 which briefly shook-up the potential podium finish but he managed to work his way into third while his brother kept second and with 7:02 on the clock, officials called the race because of lightning. Rules state when lightning strikes within eight miles of the track riders must pull off and any Moto run more than 20 minutes is considered complete.
So, Tomac (5-1) gets the win and outside of a crash, would have won anyway he was so far ahead, Hunter Lawrence (2-2) second and Jett Lawrence (1-3) third. This order gave Lawrence the overall, his brother second overall and Tomac third overall for the day. No podium interviews as the lightning sent everybody running for cover. Not exactly, but go ahead and cue the in my day we not only finished the race we installed metal poles to our dirt bikes just for kicks crowd.
Plessinger (4-5) finished fourth overall and Cooper (4-5) rounded out the Top 5.
Elsewhere, Malcolm Stewart lost a boxing match with his handlebars after an uppercut to the chin from the left grip left him dazed, ended his Moto and kept him in the pits for the second race. Cooper Webb (9-10) got tangled in a first turn crash in Moto 2 leaving him technically last, but he finished 11th for 10th overall.
250 Class
No weird weather for the 250 class but consistency continues to elude just about everyone except the rider with the #1 plate. He swept again after getting manhandled a week earlier at Thunder Valley, and extended his points lead.
Chance Hymas who entered the day on a dominating Round 3 high, did not fare as well this time getting a poor start outside the Top 10 which he crawled to fifth and a last lap crash in Moto 2 dropped him from second to third costing him a podium spot and possibly much more. Holding his right knee, Hymas appeared injured after crossing the finish line and no word yet from his camp though initial reports suggest something bigger than minor scrapes and bruising.
Hymas' crash put Tom Vialle (4-2) into second and second overall and popped Levi Kitchen on the final podium spot with a (2-6) day.
"Today was good. The last two races wasn't the best but I enjoyed the track," said Vialle who posted his best finish thus far. "Track was gnarly today. I had two good starts. Pretty good today."
Jo Shimoda (6-5) who started the season off with four straight second-place Moto finishes has trailed off in the last two rounds, at High Point finishing sixth overall though he swept around Garrett Marchbanks in Moto 1 on the last lap to steal sixth. Marchbanks, however, finished fifth overall on a (7-4) day.
Nate Thrasher, who grabbed the Unsponsored Holeshot in Moto 1 didn't last long upfront instead fell to 10th where he placed in Moto 2 for ninth overall. Seth Hammaker's third-place in Moto 1 helped him take seventh overall after finishing 14th in Moto 2. Jalek Swoll, in his first race since tearing his Achilles in early January that kept him out of Supercross finished 10th overall on a (14-8) day.
Riders get a break before resuming in Massachusetts on June 28 for the Southwick National.
