2025 Southwick Motocross Recap

The 2025 Pro Motocross Championship series resumed Saturday after a weekend off with a sandy Round 5 at the Wick in Southwick, MA.

The only sand track on the circuit usually results in some type of spectacle but this time around proved as much fun to watch as baseball. (Or soccer because I watched USA vs the Rich Coast yesterday and it befuddles me why so many consider this a spectator sport. Baseball ain't much better, though I've heard things have changed but I gave up that passion soon after everyone became bandwagon fans of the Boston Red Sox in 2004.)

At any rate, Southwick was pretty much a blowout.

Brief Synopsis. Jett Lawrence swept the 450 class and that guy who we still can't name or talk about swept the 250 class. Move on to the photos or see what amusing ramblings awaits in the recap.

As stated, Lawrence swept. He not only grabbed the $600,000 Holeshot in both Motos he checked out. He clearly has race craft, but give it to that Honda. It's the bike (this from a former pro mechanic) not Lawrence that manages to squirt out from a sea of bikes nearly every time after the first turn. Good on ya mate! Once in the lead, the rest has little chance of catching. Jett Lawrence now 5-0 for overalls on the season.

"I just go to focus on each race, that's all I can do," he said. "You can't go forwards and start thinking championship stuff like that. Take each race as they come and focus on that. But a good day."

Brother Hunter Lawrence (2-2) finished second in both races for second overall and Eli Tomac (3-3) fought a bad start in Moto 1, launching 11th, and worked his way to third, then took third in Moto 2 for third overall. In perhaps the quietest finish(es) thus far in the season, Justin Cooper (6-5) took fourth overall.

Southwick was billed as Jorge Prado's breakout round. And in some respects, it was. The two-time MXGP (450) Motocross World Champion has struggled in his first full year racing in the states and apparently loves playing in the sand, thus the prognosticators' stance he might win, or at least step on the podium. Don't listen to them, they know nothing because the sand also likes playing with Prado.

In Moto 1, with a seeming lock on third he washed out in the sand with about eight minutes on the clock after some hounding by Tomac. He dropped to seventh and fought back to fifth. In Moto 2, with a seeming lock on second he washed out in the sand with about 13 minutes on the clock. As Lawrence and Tomac passed for second and third, respectively, a head-shaking and disappointed Prado got back on his bike to finish sixth. His (5-6) day was good enough for fifth. His best outing of the year.

Elsewhere, Justin Barcia (10-9) returned to racing for the first time from a knee injury sustained at the East Rutherford round of Supercross and finished 10th overall.

250 class

Another sweep for the rider we still cannot mention by name. So, let's focus on the cool kids and the crappy television coverage.

In Moto 1, Mike Mosiman and Tom Vialle ripped into second and third, respectively, at the start but Vialle went down two minutes in. He dropped to 11th. Mikkel Haarup of Denmark, racing his first year in the states, took over third which didn't last too long once Levi Kitchen showed up.

All the while, Vialle charges towards the front. Unbeknownst to the commentators, Mosiman gets passed by Kitchen and Vialle on the final lap even though the leader board showed as much. The expressed exclamation of disbelief over the air of just what happened reminds of that scene in Lethal Weapon - "What's up detective?"

In Moto 2 the same guy we can't discuss once again grabbed the $600,000 Holeshot and checked out.

Kitchen (2-4) started third and 90 seconds in grabbed second and held on for third overall. Vialle (3-3) again finished third good enough for second overall on the tie-breaker.

"Second (overall) was the best I could do today so we go to move on to the next weekend," Vialle said admitting his charge in Moto 1 left him tired for Moto 2. "Redbud has a nice track so I can't wait to be there."

Redbuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuud! Oh, wait. Not yet.

Joe Shimoder (hey man, when in New England, talk like New England) took second in Moto 2 for the first time since opening the season with a string of second-place finishes. But his 10th in the first race gave him fifth overall. Mosiman, despite his drop to fourth in Moto 1, took home a season best fourth overall on a (4-5) day.

Shimoder holds on to second in the standings but with Chance Hymas out for the rest of the year, Vialle moves from fifth to third and Kitchen into fourth.
