UTV stands for Utility Task Vehicle or Utility Terrain Vehicle. Owners and enthusiasts use the the more common name of side by side (you can add the hyphens if you want) and those wishing to be different use the more obscure name ROV or Recreational Off highway Vehicle. UTV owners generally drive their vehicles for hunting, to handle farm work, outdoor fun tackling trails and other off-road courses as well as sanctioned racing.
Difference Between an ATV and a UTV
Size, first of all, should tune you in on the difference between an ATV and UTV. In terms of practicality, UTVs have similar properties to ATVs or All-Terrain Vehicles but use a steering wheel instead of handlebars and pedals for the break and gas, like a car. UTVs have seat belts and roll over protection, room for passengers and offer expanded payloads. A utility ATV - a cousin of sorts to the sport ATV - often used for hunting and farm work, functions more like a UTV than a regular ATV.
UTV or Side by Side
UTV, Side by Side or SxS - what you call it doesn't change what it is. The Side by Side term comes from two people sitting side by side like in a car. There's a driver, with a passenger and sometimes seating for two more passengers in the back. Some UTVs, while not true side by sides, reflect more of an ATV allowing only one person on-board but still considered a UTV featuring side by side characteristics like the steering wheel and roll over protection.
