Engine and oil-service details
The TRX90X uses a small single-cylinder four-stroke engine rather than a belt-driven CVT. Its oil service includes a drain bolt and a centrifugal oil filter assembly. The 5.9 N·m cover-bolt value is intentionally low. Excessive force can strip the crankcase threads or distort the cover, creating an oil leak.
Always start the spark plug by hand to prevent cross-threading in the cylinder head. A torque wrench is especially useful here because the aluminum head and relatively small plug threads can be damaged by over-tightening. If the plug manufacturer supplies a different installation instruction, follow the procedure specified for the plug being installed.
Wheels, chain drive and chassis
The 2018 Honda TRX90X transfers power through a conventional chain to the rear axle. It does not use a CVT or PVT belt cover, so CVT clutch and belt-cover torque values do not apply. After adjusting the chain, confirm that the rear wheel alignment marks agree on both sides and that chain slack is within the owner’s manual range before tightening the adjuster lock nuts.
Wheel nuts are safety-critical. Clean dirt from the studs and nut seats, but do not lubricate the threads unless Honda specifically calls for it. Lubrication changes the friction relationship and can make a fastener significantly tighter than the wrench reading suggests. When servicing the handlebar, position it correctly before tightening the holder bolts. Check that the throttle operates freely and that the steering moves from lock to lock without cable binding. Brake and suspension considerations
The TRX90X uses drum-style brakes rather than hydraulic disc brakes. Consequently, there are no front or rear brake-caliper mounting bolts, brake-disc bolts or master-cylinder fasteners to include in this model’s routine torque reference. Brake-arm, cable and drum service should follow the applicable adjustment and assembly procedure rather than a disc-brake torque chart.
Likewise, do not substitute generic Sport-ATV values for the TRX90X’s fork, steering or rear-suspension hardware. Fastener size and appearance are not reliable ways to determine torque. If a repair involves the steering stem, fork assembly, swingarm, axle or suspension mounting points and the exact service value is not available, obtain the correct Honda service information or have the work completed by a qualified technician.
Using torque correctly
- A dry torque specification applies to clean, dry threads. A lubricated or threadlocked fastener does not behave the same way and should not automatically receive the dry value.
- Use medium-strength threadlocker only where the applicable Honda procedure calls for it. Keep threadlocker away from bearing surfaces, brake linings and sealed components.
- Use a beam, click-type or digital torque wrench that covers the required range. Have click-type and digital tools checked periodically.
- Tighten multi-bolt covers and clamps in the stated sequence, usually in stages and in a crisscross pattern.
- Replace damaged lock nuts, sealing washers and cotter pins. Never reuse a cotter pin after it has been bent into position.
Under-torquing can allow wheel, exhaust, chain or steering hardware to loosen. Over-torquing can stretch bolts, strip crankcase threads, distort covers and damage wheel studs. After completing work on the 2018 Honda TRX90X, perform a careful inspection, verify controls and brakes, and conduct a slow test ride before returning the ATV to normal use.
