The 2017 Honda TRX90X is a compact, chain-driven youth ATV powered by an air-cooled 86 cc four-stroke engine. Its straightforward design makes routine service approachable, but correct torque remains important: loose wheel or suspension hardware can create dangerous movement, while over-tightening can damage aluminum threads, brake components or fasteners. Use the specifications below for commonly serviced areas of the 2017 TRX90X.

2017 Honda TRX90X torque specifications

Values are provided in both Newton-metres and pound-feet. When a specification calls for a locking device, cotter pin or a particular tightening procedure, that requirement is as important as the torque number itself.

Component Torque Service notes
Spark plug 18 Nm (13 lb-ft) Install with clean, dry threads unless the plug manufacturer specifies otherwise.
Engine oil drain bolt 18 Nm (13 lb-ft) Check the sealing washer and replace it if damaged or crushed.
Oil centrifugal-filter cover bolts 4 Nm (3 lb-ft) Tighten evenly in a crisscross pattern; these small bolts thread into engine cases.
Front wheel nuts 47 Nm (35 lb-ft) Tighten evenly with the wheel on the ground or otherwise secured.
Rear wheel nuts 47 Nm (35 lb-ft) Recheck after the first ride following wheel installation.
Rear axle nut 88 Nm (65 lb-ft) Install the required retaining hardware after tightening.
Front axle nut 59 Nm (44 lb-ft) Confirm the axle and hub are properly seated before final tightening.
Handlebar holder bolts 27 Nm (20 lb-ft) Tighten evenly so the handlebar is centered and the clamp gap remains uniform.
Steering-stem nut 59 Nm (44 lb-ft) Verify steering movement after installation; do not preload the bearings unnecessarily.
Front brake caliper mounting bolts 27 Nm (20 lb-ft) Use clean threads and confirm the caliper is fully seated before tightening.
Brake disc bolts 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) Apply the specified medium-strength threadlocker and tighten in stages.
Rear sprocket nuts 32 Nm (24 lb-ft) Use the specified locking method and check sprocket alignment with the chain.
Chain adjuster lock nuts 22 Nm (16 lb-ft) Adjust chain slack and alignment before securing the lock nuts.

Engine service points

The TRX90X uses a small air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine rather than a liquid-cooled powerplant. During an oil change, inspect the drain-bolt sealing washer and start the threads by hand. Cross-threading the aluminum crankcase can turn a simple service into a major repair.

The engine uses a centrifugal oil-filter assembly rather than an automotive-style spin-on filter. Remove and reinstall its cover carefully, clean the sealing surfaces and tighten the small cover bolts evenly. Excessive torque can strip the case or distort the cover. The spark plug should also be started by hand to protect the cylinder-head threads. Avoid applying anti-seize unless the plug manufacturer specifically permits it, because lubrication changes the clamping load produced by a given torque.

Chain drive, axle and wheel hardware

Unlike a belt-driven CVT ATV, the 2017 Honda TRX90X transfers power through a chain and sprockets. After rear-wheel or axle work, set chain slack and confirm the rear wheel is straight before tightening the axle hardware. A misaligned wheel can accelerate chain, sprocket and bearing wear.

Wheel nuts should be tightened with the mating surfaces clean and free of grease. Do not use an impact wrench for final tightening. After replacing a wheel, hub or sprocket, rotate the assembly by hand and check for binding before riding. Any retaining cotter pin or other locking hardware must be installed as required; never substitute increased torque for missing retention hardware.

Brakes, steering and controls

The TRX90X has a front hydraulic disc brake and rear mechanical drum-brake hardware. Brake fasteners deserve extra care because loose caliper or disc hardware can immediately affect control. Threadlocker belongs only where specified, and brake-disc friction surfaces must remain completely free of oil or threadlocker.

Handlebar clamps should be tightened evenly around the bar. After steering-stem service, turn the handlebar from lock to lock and confirm there is no notchiness, binding or cable interference. Suspension and steering parts should never be tightened while misaligned or forced into position. If a ball joint, tie-rod end or other chassis component requires replacement, follow the applicable service procedure for its locking hardware and alignment.

Using torque correctly

A dry torque specification assumes clean, dry threads. Oil, grease or threadlocker reduces friction and can produce substantially more clamping force at the same wrench setting. Unless the service procedure says otherwise, clean the threads and use the specified condition. Medium-strength threadlocker may be required on selected brake or drivetrain fasteners, but it should not be applied indiscriminately.

  • Use a beam, click-type or digital torque wrench that covers the required range.
  • Pull smoothly and keep the wrench square to the fastener.
  • Use a smaller torque wrench for the oil-filter cover bolts and other low-torque hardware.
  • Replace damaged, stretched or single-use hardware instead of reusing it.
  • Complete required chain adjustment, alignment, tightening sequences and retaining-pin installation before riding.

Under-torqued hardware can loosen from vibration, while over-torqued hardware can stretch, crack or strip. For brake, steering, axle or internal-engine repairs beyond routine maintenance, use the correct 2017 Honda TRX90X service information or have the work completed by a qualified technician.
