The 2023 Honda TRX90X is a youth-focused 89 cc, air-cooled, four-stroke ATV with a chain-driven final drive and drum brakes. Correct fastener torque is especially important on this lightweight machine because loose wheel, axle, steering or suspension hardware can affect control, while excessive torque can damage aluminum threads or distort components.

2023 Honda TRX90X torque specifications
The following commonly serviced values apply to the 2023 Honda TRX90X. Torque values are listed in newton-metres (N·m), with pound-feet (lb-ft) in parentheses.
| Component | Torque | Service notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | 18 N·m (13 lb-ft) | Install with clean threads and tighten only after starting it by hand. |
| Engine oil drain bolt | 18 N·m (13 lb-ft) | Inspect the sealing washer and replace it if damaged or if the service procedure calls for replacement. |
| Front wheel nuts | 64 N·m (47 lb-ft) | Tighten evenly in a crisscross pattern with the wheel fully seated. |
| Rear wheel nuts | 64 N·m (47 lb-ft) | Recheck seating after installation and before riding. |
Engine service points
The TRX90X uses a simple single-cylinder engine rather than a liquid-cooled multi-cylinder design. During an oil change, clean the area around the drain bolt before removal so dirt cannot enter the crankcase. After replacing the bolt and sealing washer, bring it to 18 N·m. Do not use an impact tool for final tightening.
The TRX90X does not use a conventional replaceable spin-on oil filter. Its engine oil service involves the drain system and internal oil-filtering components. Because those internal parts require model-specific disassembly and inspection procedures, do not apply the drain-bolt value to an oil-filter cover, oil screen or internal plug. Use the 2023 Honda service procedure for any internal engine fastener.
For the spark plug, begin threading by hand to prevent cross-threading in the cylinder head. The specified 18 N·m is for properly prepared threads; do not add anti-seize unless the applicable service instructions specifically require it, since lubricant changes clamping force at the same wrench setting.
Chain drive, wheels and chassis
Unlike a belt-driven automatic ATV, the 2023 Honda TRX90X transfers power through a chain and sprockets. Chain adjustment is a maintenance operation, but the adjuster hardware must be tightened according to the model-specific procedure and alignment checks. Do not substitute the wheel-nut value for the rear axle nut, sprocket hardware, chain adjuster lock nuts or chain-guide fasteners. Those parts have different clamping requirements and should be serviced using the exact Honda specification for the fastener and location.
Wheel nuts are safety-critical. Clean rust, mud and debris from the studs and nut seats, then install the wheel squarely against the hub or drum. Tighten the nuts gradually in a crisscross sequence before applying 64 N·m. After the first short ride, inspect the wheel seating and nut security. Never lubricate wheel studs unless the specified procedure calls for it, because wet threads can produce substantially more clamping force than dry threads at the same torque reading.
Brakes, steering and suspension
The TRX90X uses mechanically actuated drum brakes, not hydraulic disc brakes. Consequently, there are no front or rear brake-caliper mounting bolts, brake-disc bolts or master-cylinder bolts to include in this model's routine torque list. Brake adjustments, backing-plate hardware and control-cable work should follow the specific tightening and adjustment instructions for the applicable assembly.
Steering and suspension fasteners are equally important, but values should not be inferred from bolt diameter. Handlebar clamps, steering-stem hardware, front suspension joints, rear shock mounts and swingarm hardware may use different specifications, tightening sequences or locking methods. If one of these components is removed, use the 2023 TRX90X service information for that exact location rather than a general ATV torque chart.
Dry versus lubricated torque
A dry-torque specification assumes clean, dry threads unless the instructions say otherwise. Oil, grease, anti-seize compound or threadlocker reduces friction and can increase bolt stretch and clamping force. A lubricated fastener therefore should not automatically be tightened to the same number as a dry fastener.
Threadlocker may be required on selected chassis or drivetrain fasteners, but it should be used only where the model-specific procedure calls for it. Keep threadlocker away from brake friction surfaces, wheel seating faces and components that must remain serviceable. Replace damaged lock nuts, sealing washers, cotter pins or other one-time-use hardware instead of reusing them.
Torque-wrench practice
- A click-type wrench is convenient for routine work; a digital wrench provides a clear numerical readout and alerts; a beam wrench is simple and durable when read correctly.
- Select a wrench whose operating range places the target near the middle of its scale.
- Pull smoothly and keep the wrench aligned with the fastener.
- Use a calibrated wrench, particularly for wheel, steering, suspension and engine work.
- Follow required tightening sequences, alignment checks, preload settings and cotter-pin installation steps.
Under-torquing can allow movement, fretting, chain misalignment or wheel loosening. Over-torquing can stretch fasteners, strip threads, crack covers and damage hubs or engine components. For brake, steering, suspension or internal engine repairs on the 2023 Honda TRX90X, consult the appropriate service information or a qualified technician before returning the ATV to use.
