Cold-weather starting difficulty on a 2002 TT 600 tends to surprise owners, because a modern-feeling supersport ought to just fire and go. It usually does, and when it does not, the explanation is rarely exotic. This is a fuel-injected bike with electric start and a liquid-cooled inline four, so the causes worth investigating are electrical, mechanical, or sensor-related rather than anything to do with technique.
Winter Shrinks a Sportbike Battery's Reserve
The battery is where most of these stories end, so it is worth starting there. Current comes from a chemical reaction, and cold slows that reaction, meaning a battery in perfectly good health delivers less to the starter on a freezing morning than it does in July. Nothing has failed. The capacity is temporarily reduced by temperature.
On a 600 supersport the battery is compact by design, which leaves less headroom to absorb that loss than a big tourer has. Add the fact that sportbikes often sit for weeks between rides in winter, and a battery that seemed fine in September can be genuinely marginal in December. Listen for cranking that sounds slow or drops in pitch, watch for instrument lighting that dims hard as the starter engages, and note whether the bike starts easily after a ride yet balks following a night outdoors. Keeping it on a maintenance charger through the cold months solves a surprising share of these complaints outright.
Thickened Oil and the Drag It Creates
Oil becomes markedly more resistant to shear as it cools. That heavier film sits on journals, cylinder walls, and cam lobes and must be displaced before the crank turns freely, so cranking speed falls in the cold on any healthy engine.
The TT 600 is not a heavyweight, so the absolute drag is smaller than on a large-displacement bike. Its relevant characteristic is different: a short-stroke, high-compression four with tight clearances and a modest oil volume, where thick cold oil takes a moment longer to reach the top of the engine. That is the honest reason to give it a short warm-up in winter, and the reason a hard pull in the first mile is worse for it than at any other point in a ride.
Enrichment Without Rider Input
There is no choke on this bike and no cold-start procedure to learn. The engine management system reads temperature data, works out how much extra fuel the conditions demand, and reduces that enrichment as the engine warms. All the rider provides is a strong crank.
Because of that, a persistent cold-start problem carries useful information. If the engine spins briskly and will not catch, the likely candidates are a temperature sensor reporting inaccurately, insufficient fuel pressure, or injectors that are not spraying cleanly. A drifting sensor in particular explains a bike that starts well warm and badly cold, since the system leans on other feedback once it is at operating temperature. None of these can be diagnosed by feel, and none improve with practice at the controls.
Ignition Under a Rich Cold Charge
The hardest thing the ignition system does all year is light a cold cylinder. The air is dense, the mixture has been deliberately enriched, and a share of the fuel has puddled on cold metal rather than remaining vaporized. That requires a strong spark at the right gap.
Consequently a plug can be perfectly adequate for warm running and marginal at startup. Worn electrodes or a light carbon film pass unnoticed once the engine is hot and cost revolutions when it is cold. On a four-cylinder engine one lazy plug removes a quarter of the firing opportunities during the critical first seconds. It is a cheap, quick check and it belongs early in the process, not after the expensive parts have been swapped.
Warming Up Without Wringing It Out
A brief idle after the engine catches lets oil circulate and the fueling stabilize. A minute or so is plenty, since a liquid-cooled engine gains temperature much faster under light load than standing still.
The part that genuinely protects the engine is the first several miles. Clearances have not opened to their designed dimensions and oil is thicker than intended, so early hard revs impose loads the engine is not set up to take yet. A TT 600 is built to be revved, and it will do that all day once warm. Give it a few gentle miles first and it will last considerably longer.
When a Scan Tool Beats Guesswork
An extra beat of cranking on a bitterly cold morning, followed by a bike that runs cleanly, is normal. Escalate if the TT 600 cranks strongly but refuses to fire, if it lights and dies at once, if it stumbles through the opening mile instead of smoothing out, or if the problem has worsened every winter. Cranking that remains slow after a fresh battery is fitted also belongs outside ordinary weather effects. On an injected bike the fault is usually one specific, identifiable item, and a proper diagnosis finds it far more cheaply than trial and error.
