Few things test a rider's patience like standing over a bike that started perfectly yesterday afternoon and will not cooperate this morning. On the 2004 Brutale S the difference is often nothing more than twenty degrees of air temperature. That may sound dismissive, but cold has real and measurable effects on oil, batteries, and combustion, and each one deserves its own explanation.
Ignition Is the First Thing to Reach Its Limit
Cold starting places the ignition system under the heaviest demand it ever faces. The intake charge is dense, the metal surrounding the combustion chamber is stealing heat from the mixture, and the fuel system is deliberately running rich. All of that has to catch within a few revolutions of the crank, which is a far tougher task than sustaining combustion in an engine that is already hot.
Because of that, spark plugs can behave inconsistently in a way that confuses owners. A plug with worn electrodes, a faint carbon coating, or a gap that has crept open will often keep the 749cc four running smoothly for an entire ride and still be the reason it took an age to start. If your Brutale S is faultless once it catches, plug condition belongs near the front of the list. Doing all four together avoids leaving one cylinder at a disadvantage.
Knowing What You Are Working With
The 2004 Brutale S is fuel-injected with an electric starter and liquid cooling. State that clearly and half the internet's cold-start advice becomes irrelevant to you. There is no choke or enrichment lever to operate, so it is impossible to use too little of it or release it too early. Cold-start enrichment is calculated and delivered by the control unit based on temperature readings.
The value of that clarity is focus. On this bike the only two useful questions are whether the engine turns over fast enough and whether the mixture it receives suits the actual conditions. Everything that legitimately causes a hard cold start on the Brutale S falls under one of those headings.
Thick Oil Makes the Starter Work Harder
Oil viscosity increases as temperature falls, and thicker oil resists being displaced from between moving surfaces. The starter must overcome that resistance across four pistons, a crankshaft, and a complete valvetrain before the engine can run under its own power. This is why cranking speed drops on a cold morning even with a perfectly good electrical system behind it.
Oil also circulates more slowly when thick, so full pressure at the top of the engine is established later after a freezing start than after a warm one. That delay is the genuine reason a brief pause before setting off matters more in winter than in summer, and it is true of every engine ever built rather than anything particular to this machine.
Cranking Power Fades With the Thermometer
An electric-start bike is only as willing as its battery, and cold reduces what a battery can deliver. The chemical reactions that produce current slow down at low temperatures, so available cranking amperage drops even in a pack that would test perfectly well in a heated garage. The reduction is temporary, but it lands at exactly the wrong time.
Look for cranking that sounds labored or slows while you hold the button, dash lighting that dims during cranking, easy starts immediately after riding but poor ones after a night in the cold, and a clear pattern of worsening performance as the battery has accumulated seasons. If the Brutale S has been sliding downhill each winter and its battery has several years behind it, that is the most probable explanation and the easiest to test. A maintenance charger through cold stretches often solves it completely.
When the Injection Side Deserves Blame
If the engine spins over strongly and still refuses to catch when cold, the fueling system becomes the focus. Enrichment on this bike is a calculation performed from sensor input, so poor input produces a poor mixture. A temperature sensor reporting a warmer engine than reality is a well-understood cause of a bike that starts easily warm and badly cold.
Supply is the other half. A successful cold start needs a rich charge delivered promptly and atomized finely, which depends on fuel pressure holding up and injectors spraying cleanly. Fuel that has spent months in the tank through a layup loses its lighter, most easily ignited components, making the whole task harder. None of these require guesswork; a shop with diagnostic access can read the values and check the delivery side quickly.
A Minute or Two Before the 749cc Four Gets Worked
Let it idle for a minute or two after it fires. That is long enough for oil to move and for fueling to settle into a stable pattern. Beyond that, standing still is inefficient, since engines take on heat more evenly with a light load than they do stationary.
Throttle discipline over the opening miles is where the real benefit lies. Clearances are tighter than the operating dimensions the engine was designed around, and the oil film is still heavier than intended. Hard revving in that condition works the bearings, rings, and cam drive at the least favourable moment. Ride gently until the temperature has come up and the engine will show its appreciation over years rather than minutes.
Deciding When It Is Worth a Diagnosis
A second or two of extra cranking on a frozen morning, followed by an engine that idles cleanly and pulls properly, is entirely normal. It is no longer normal when the Brutale S still struggles after several minutes of running, when this winter is unmistakably worse than the last, when several attempts have replaced a single press of the button, or when the engine misfires and runs unevenly once you are moving instead of clearing up. Cranking that remains slow after a full charge or a new battery is a further sign. Those patterns are worth handing over to a mechanic rather than continuing to experiment.
