The hose carrying fuel to your 2025 Grizzly 700Fi is brand new today, and it will still be a rubber component living next to a hot engine in a chassis that vibrates constantly. Understanding how that hose ages, what a failure looks like, and how to replace it correctly on an injected system is knowledge worth having long before you need it — and it makes an unexpected repair on the trail far less intimidating.
How a Fuel Hose Ages
Rubber fuel hose stays flexible thanks to plasticizers blended into the compound, and heat is what removes them. Each warmup and cooldown cycle drives a little more out of the hose wall, and over enough of them the material turns stiff and glassy instead of supple. A hardened hose cannot flex with a machine that works hard over rough terrain, so hairline splits begin where stress concentrates: at bends, at clamp shoulders, and wherever the hose sits under slight tension.
The bore ages by a different route. Ethanol blended pump gas draws in moisture from the air and slowly attacks the inner liner, producing gum and softened material. That process is most aggressive when the machine sits for long stretches with fuel standing motionless against the liner rather than flowing through. Because these two mechanisms operate independently, a hose that still looks respectable on the outside can be well past its best on the inside, and that is why an occasional inspection matters more than mileage.
What a Failing Hose Looks Like
The evidence usually shows up in more than one place at once:
- A wet patch or puddle on the skid plate or garage floor under the middle of the quad after it has been parked
- A sharp gasoline odor around the center of the machine, most noticeable in the minutes right after shutdown
- Cracking, crazing, or a chalky bloom on the hose surface, worst at the curves
- A hard, unyielding feel when you pinch the hose rather than soft, even compression
- An engine that bogs on a climb, hesitates under throttle, or surges lean as though the tank were nearly empty
- Caked mud or dust forming a ring at a fitting, left behind by fuel weeping and evaporating over time
Since a pressure side pinhole on an injected machine can atomize into vapor and never reach the ground, a persistent smell over a dry floor is still meaningful.
Confirming the Fuel Delivery Setup
This Grizzly is electronically fuel injected. An electric pump inside the tank pressurizes the hose and feeds the throttle body, where the injector meters fuel into the engine. Nothing is gravity fed, so there is no petcock under the tank to shut off before disconnecting a hose, and the circuit retains pressure after the key goes off. Those two facts drive the procedure: bleed the pressure before opening any fitting, and use line clamping pliers to pinch the hose closed in place of the shutoff valve this machine does not have.
Hose selection follows the same reasoning. Buy hose rated for fuel injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not the low pressure hose sold for carburetor feed. Note too that filtration lives inside the tank with the pump rather than inline on the visible hose, which means new plumbing cures plumbing problems and a restricted in-tank filter stays a separate line of investigation.
Getting Set Up Safely
Have the hose, new clamps sized to fit, a quick connect release tool if the pump plate uses a locking coupler, line clamping pliers, nitrile gloves, eye protection, a sealed fuel container, a drain pan, plenty of rags, a socket set, a screwdriver, and a sharp knife all within reach before you begin.
Then take the fumes seriously, because this is the one part of the job that can genuinely hurt you. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and spreads across the floor rather than escaping through a window at head height. A closed garage that also houses a water heater, furnace, or shop heater is the wrong environment for an open fuel line. Work outdoors if the weather permits, or with the door fully raised and a fan moving air along the floor to sweep vapor out. Shut off every pilot light and heating element in the space, keep an extinguisher within arm's reach, and take fuel soaked rags outside instead of leaving them piled in a bin.
Removing the Original Hose
Depressurize the circuit: pull the fuel pump fuse from the box under the seat, let the engine run until it starves and stops, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and the side plastics, keeping the XT-R trim fasteners organized, then trace the hose from the pump plate on the tank back to the throttle body.
Set the drain pan underneath and drape a rag over the joint before releasing it, since a bled line still holds a slug of fuel. Slide the clamps well down the hose and away from the barbs first. On a plastic quick connect, compress the release tabs evenly and pull the coupler straight off rather than levering it to one side. Should a hose end be varnished onto a barb, twist it gently to break the bond, and if it will not release, slit it lengthwise and peel it off instead of prying on the fitting.
Note the routing while the original is still in place. This chassis pairs four wheel drive with independent rear suspension, and between the front differential hardware and the rear linkage there are more clearance points and clip locations than a simple 2WD machine presents. A few photographs now save guesswork on reassembly.
Installation and the Final Check
Cut the replacement to the same length as the old hose and no longer, because slack sags onto a frame tube where it chafes or drifts toward the exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, and assemble it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone have no place on a fitting; lubricant on a sealing surface hands pressurized fuel a path to creep along and weep out. Warm water for a few seconds is the correct fix for a hose end that fights you.
Place new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm enough to seal without deforming the hose. A self locking quick connect gets no clamp: press it on until the collar clicks, then tug hard to confirm it latched. Feed the hose back through every original clip so it stays clear of the driveline, the suspension, and hot exhaust surfaces.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the hose, letting you inspect both joints while everything is still dry. Wipe them clean, watch for any bead of fuel forming, then start the engine and check again at idle for several minutes. Finish with a slow lap and one last look while the machine is warm.
