Before a single clamp moves on the 2025 Sportsman XP 1000 S, settle the question that dictates the entire procedure: how does this machine move fuel? The answer is electronic fuel injection, fed by a pump mounted inside the tank, delivering gasoline under pressure through a supply hose to the throttle body. That single fact rules out every shortcut a carbureted quad would allow and shapes the order of every step that follows.

No Petcock, No Float Bowl, No Inline Filter

A carbureted utility quad hands you three conveniences: a valve under the tank to shut off flow, a float bowl drain to empty the low side, and a plain rubber hose held on two barbs by simple clamps. The XP 1000 S offers none of them. Pressure remains in the supply line after shutdown and must be bled off deliberately. The tank end typically terminates in a self-locking quick-connect coupler rather than a worm-gear clamp. And the filter element is built into the in-tank pump module, so do not waste time searching the frame rails for a serviceable canister that was never there.

Reasons a Hose Reaches the End of Its Life

Two mechanisms conspire against fuel rubber. Heat cycles slowly drive out the plasticizers that keep the wall soft, and once enough have left, the hose stiffens, stops flexing with the chassis, and starts to craze. Dry-climate riders see that hardening arrive early, because arid air steadily pulls moisture from the outer surface. Working inward, ethanol-blended pump gas left standing for weeks draws in water and degrades the inner liner, softening it and leaving gum that can migrate toward the injectors. A hose therefore ages on the calendar, not the odometer, and one that looks acceptable can already be compromised.

Warning Signs Worth Chasing Down

  • Fuel staining or a small puddle beneath the frame after the machine has been parked overnight
  • A gasoline smell that hangs around the quad, sharpest in the minutes immediately after shutdown
  • Fine cracks or crazing, geneRally starting where the hose stretches across a fitting
  • A stiff, glassy, or chalky feel where the hose should compress and rebound
  • Dust caked in a ring at a connection, the fingerprint of slow seepage
  • Bogging under load, hesitation as revs rise, or lean-feeling running with plenty of fuel aboard

Keep in mind that a pressurized leak often atomizes and evaporates before it drips, so a dry floor is not an alibi for a suspect hose.

Preparation, Supplies, and Ventilation

Have all of this staged first:

  • Injection-rated fuel hose in the factory inside diameter
  • New fuel-rated clamps and a quick-disconnect release tool
  • Line-clamping pliers to hold back flow in place of the absent shutoff valve
  • Nitrile gloves and eye protection
  • A drain pan and an approved sealed container for captured fuel
  • Sockets, a stubby flat-blade driver, a razor blade, and clean rags

Handle the fuel itself with respect. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and collects at floor level, which is precisely where a shop heater, grinder, or water heater pilot light lives. Do this outdoors or with the door rolled fully open and air moving low through the space, keep the container capped between pours, and let the exhaust cool completely before you begin.

Working the Old Hose Free

Start by relieving pressure: pull the fuel pump fuse, crank until the engine catches and stalls on its own, key off, then disconnect the battery negative cable. Lift the seat and take off whatever panel blocks a clear view of the tank and hose run. Position the drain pan and lay a rag over the first joint you plan to open, since the hose still holds liquid fuel even with the pressure gone.

Slide clamps well back along the hose before you disturb a fitting. Release a quick-connect by squeezing both tabs evenly and drawing it straight off the flange — never lever it sideways, because plastic collars grow brittle with heat and age. When an end has varnished itself to a barb, twist it gently to break the bond or slit it lengthwise with a blade and peel it away rather than fighting the fitting. Photograph the routing before the line is completely free. This all-wheel-drive chassis guides the hose past front differential hardware and additional frame crossmembers a two-wheel-drive machine would not have, and the wide-track S layout gives you enough room to work from the side of the quad rather than reaching over the top of it.

Fitting the Replacement and Confirming It Is Dry

Cut the new hose to match the old length exactly. A long piece chafes on the frame or drifts toward hot exhaust surfaces, while a short piece pulls on its fittings as the engine rocks on its mounts. Press each end onto its barb dry until it seats against the shoulder, warming a stubborn end in hot water. Keep grease, oil, and silicone completely off the fittings, because lubricant on a sealing surface is exactly how pressurized fuel creeps out from under a clamp. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead and snug them evenly, firm without deforming the hose. A self-locking coupler needs only a push until it clicks and a hard tug to verify. Reseat the hose in each original retaining clip.

Finish by proving the repair. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line while the hose is still clean and dry. Inspect and feel both joints, then start the engine and look again at idle under good light, blipping the throttle as pressure changes. Reinstall bodywork only after several leak-free minutes, then ride a slow loop and check underneath once more. If the 2025 XP 1000 S still feels soft under throttle, the in-tank filter inside the pump assembly is the next component to evaluate.
