Youth quads live hard lives in short bursts. The 2025 Sportsman 110 gets ridden in the yard for twenty minutes, parked for three weeks, then hauled out again, and that pattern is tough on fuel hose. The single-cylinder 110 runs electronic fuel injection with a small electric pump inside the tank, so there is no petcock to twist shut and the hose you are replacing holds pressure after the key comes out. It is a two-wheel-drive machine with tidy bodywork, which makes the run short and easy to reach once the plastics are off.
Why the Hose Hardens and Cracks
Rubber ages chemically whether or not the quad is used. Heat cycles drive out the plasticizers that keep the wall pliable, and the hose gradually turns stiff and prone to splitting. Dry climates speed that process considerably, since low humidity pulls moisture from the outer surface year round. Add ethanol-blended gasoline sitting for weeks at a time between rides, which absorbs water and slowly breaks down the inner liner, and you get a hose that can look presentable while gumming up or shedding material internally. On a machine that spends more time parked than moving, the fuel sitting in the line is often harder on it than the riding.
Signs Something Is Wrong
- A gasoline smell around the machine after it has been shut off or parked in a shed
- Wet residue or a small puddle on the floor beneath the frame overnight
- Visible cracking or a chalky, hardened texture on the hose, especially near a fitting
- Dust caked into a ring at a connection, which means fuel has been seeping and evaporating
- The engine bogging, dying under throttle, or acting like it is out of fuel when the tank has plenty
Because this is a small displacement engine, a fuel restriction shows up quickly as a rider complaining the quad will not pull the way it used to. Take that report seriously rather than assuming it is just a young rider misjudging the throttle.
Injected, Not Carbureted — What That Means Here
Older and simpler youth quads use gravity feed: fuel drops from the tank through a petcock, down a soft hose, and into a carburetor with a float bowl you can drain. The 2025 Sportsman 110 works differently. Its pump sits inside the tank and pushes fuel under pressure to the throttle body, so nothing is gravity fed and no valve exists to stop flow. That means pressure has to be relieved before disassembly, the fuel filter is packaged with the in-tank pump rather than clipped inline where you can see it, and the tank connection may use a small locking coupler instead of a plain clamped barb.
Preparation and Gasoline Handling
Set out the following before you start:
- Replacement hose rated for fuel injection pressure in the original inside diameter
- New fuel-rated clamps sized for a small hose, or a release tool if a locking coupler is fitted
- Line-clamping pliers to pinch off flow, since this machine has no shutoff valve
- Nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A small drain pan and an approved sealed container
- Basic sockets, a stubby flat-blade driver, a razor blade, and clean rags
Even a small tank holds enough gasoline to make vapor a real hazard. Vapor is heavier than air and collects along the floor where you will not smell it until it has spread, so work outdoors or with the door fully open and air moving at ground level. Keep the fuel container capped between pours, let the exhaust cool, and keep children and pets away from the work area for the duration.
Disconnecting the Old Hose
Relieve the pressure first. Pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine briefly until it starts and stalls on its own, turn the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and the side panels that cover the tank so you can see both ends of the hose at once. Slip the drain pan underneath and lay a rag over the first fitting you open, because residual fuel will run out even after the pressure is gone.
Slide any clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the fitting itself. If a locking coupler is used, squeeze the tabs evenly and pull straight off rather than prying at an angle, since small plastic collars are the easiest ones to crack. A hose end that has varnished onto its barb releases with a gentle twist, or slice it lengthwise and peel it away instead of levering on the fitting. Note the routing before the old piece is completely free. The 110 is two-wheel drive, so there is no front differential to work around and the path is more direct than on a full-size 4x4, but the retaining clips still matter for keeping the hose clear of hot surfaces.
Installing and Checking Your Work
Cut the new hose to the exact length of the old one. On a short run like this, even an inch of extra slack can let the hose sag against something it should not touch. Push each end fully onto its barb dry, dipping the end in hot water if it is reluctant to slide, and keep grease, oil, and silicone spray entirely off the fittings — lubricant on a sealing surface simply gives pressurized fuel a way past the clamp. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and snug them evenly; small hoses are easy to overtighten and crush, so stop at firm. A self-locking coupler needs a push until it clicks and a tug to confirm, nothing more. Seat the hose in each original clip.
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line while the hose is still dry. Look and feel around both connections, then start the engine and inspect again at idle. After several minutes with no seepage, refit the plastics and seat. If the Sportsman 110 still runs poorly with a fresh, leak-free hose, the in-tank filter and pump assembly is the next place to look, since a new line cannot restore flow through a plugged element.
