Know the System: This One Is Injected

The trailing letter in 4x4i is your clue. This 749cc V-twin runs digital fuel injection, so there is no petcock tucked under the tank waiting to be turned off. Instead, an electric pump sits inside the tank and holds the supply hose under pressure whenever the key has been on, and it keeps a fair amount of that pressure for a while after shutdown. Cracking a fitting on a live circuit sprays fuel rather than dribbling it, so the whole approach differs from the gravity-feed plumbing riders remember on older carbureted machines.

Two other traits of the injected setup are worth filing away.   • Bogging under load, a stumble when you snap the throttle, or a lean surge that behaves like the engine is running out of fuel

On an injected machine, a pinhole on the pressure side often atomizes and evaporates instead of dripping, so you may smell the problem long before you ever see a puddle. Trust your nose here and inspect with the plastics off and good light.

  • A sealed metal or approved fuel container plus a shallow catch pan

Do this work outdoors or with the garage door fully open. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so a cracked window at head height does almost nothing. Keep water heaters, shop heaters, grinders, and anything else that sparks well away from the area, and have the fire extinguisher within reach rather than across the shop.

Depressurizing and Getting the Old Line Out

Start by killing the pressure. Proving the Repair Before You Load Up

Reinstall the fuse and Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off three or four times without starting the engine. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the circuit, which lets you inspect dry joints under real pressure. Wipe both connections with a clean rag, watch for beading, and put your nose close. Start the engine and check again at idle, then blip the throttle and look one more time before the plastics go back on.
