How Fuel Actually Reaches the Engine on This Machine

An electric pump module sits down in the tank, pushes fuel up a short, reinforced supply hose, and feeds the throttle body ahead of the cylinder. What Makes a Perfectly Good Hose Go Bad

Fuel hose ages from both sides at once. Heat cycling from the engine bay slowly drives the plasticizers out of the rubber, and the once-supple hose turns stiff, chalky, and prone to splitting where it bends around a fitting. Riders in arid country watch this happen faster, since low humidity accelerates the drying and hardening of the outer wall. Meanwhile ethanol-blended pump gas works on the inner liner, absorbing moisture and softening the bore, particularly when a Rubicon sits unused for a season with a partial tank. The combination leaves you with a hose that looks fine but is brittle outside and eroding inside, occasionally shedding fine debris toward the injector.

Catching a Failing Line Before It Quits

Give the fuel plumbing a hard look any time the seat comes off. Warning signs include:

  • A damp patch or dried fuel ring beneath the tank area or on the skid plate
  • Gasoline odor around the machine that lingers after shutdown, when the system is still holding pressure
  • Visible surface cracks, a glazed sheen, or a section that feels rigid instead of springy when pinched

Depressurizing and Removing the Old Hose

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine for a few seconds until it stalls. Turn the key off and disconnect the battery negative cable. Drape a rag over the first joint you loosen, because residual fuel will still run out of a depressurized line.

Seating the New Hose Properly

Proving the Repair Before the First Ride
