Even a current-model quad benefits from an owner who knows how to handle its fuel plumbing, whether because a hose got nicked on a trail obstacle, a clamp was disturbed during other work, or the machine has already accumulated some seasons in a dry climate. The 2025 Recon ES uses a carburetor rather than fuel injection, so the fuel path is short and entirely mechanical: tank, petcock, one rubber hose, carburetor.
Understanding Why Hose Goes Bad
Fuel hose is a rubber compound softened by plasticizers, and those additives slowly leave the material under heat. On the Recon the line runs close to an air-cooled cylinder, so it sees a heat cycle every ride. Over years the hose stiffens, loses the elasticity that let it absorb vibration, and begins to check on the surface. Arid regional air compounds the problem by drawing residual moisture from the hose wall, which is why identical machines can have very different hose lifespans depending on where they live.
Internally the culprit is ethanol-blended pump fuel. Ethanol attracts water, and the resulting blend degrades rubber more aggressively than gasoline by itself. Fuel that sits stagnant for a season deposits gum and varnish along the bore and can soften the liner to the point that it releases particles toward the carburetor's small jets. Because both processes proceed at once, a hose may be brittle outside and swollen inside on the very same machine.
Diagnosing a Failing Line
The most common tip-off is smell. A gasoline odor hanging around the tank of a cold Recon means fuel is escaping somewhere. Visual evidence usually shows up next: a small puddle or dried stain beneath the engine, which on a gravity-fed system accumulates while the quad simply sits with the petcock open. Under a light, look for hairline cracks, a chalky gray surface, or a band of dust cemented to a fitting by repeated seepage.
How the engine runs matters too. A line that has collapsed internally or filled with gum starves the float bowl, producing a bog when you load the engine on a climb, a lean stumble as you roll the throttle on, or behavior that mimics an empty tank. Those complaints look the same on a fuel-injected quad, though there a pressure-side leak often atomizes and evaporates instead of leaving a puddle to find.
Preparation and Handling Fuel Safely
Everything needed fits in a small pile:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- New gasoline-rated hose matched to the original inside diameter
- Fresh clamps in the factory style, plus spares
- A sealed, approved fuel container and a shallow drain pan
- Flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, a sharp razor blade
- Rags and a flashlight
Ventilation is the safety item that actually matters. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, sinks, and travels along the floor toward pilot lights and shop heaters. Do the work outside or with the overhead door wide open, extinguish open flames in the space, and let the engine and exhaust cool completely before starting. Keep the fuel container closed between pours and wipe up spills right away.
Disconnecting the Old Hose
Turn the petcock off. That valve is the whole shutoff procedure on a carbureted Recon — a fuel-injected quad has none, and you would either pinch the line closed with clamping pliers or pull the pump fuse and crank until the engine stalls to relieve pressure. Take off the seat and the plastic panel over the tank so both ends of the hose are visible.
Position the pan under the carburetor and loosen the float bowl drain screw to empty the fuel trapped downstream. Slide both clamps back along the hose, then twist each end at the barb to break the seal before pulling it free. Never lever at a fitting with a screwdriver; the petcock spigot and carburetor inlet mar easily and a marred barb weeps forever. Slit a stubborn hose lengthwise and peel it. Before the line is fully out, record the routing and clip locations. The Recon ES is two-wheel drive, so the run is direct and short, unlike a 4x4 utility quad where the hose must be threaded past front differential hardware and extra frame clearance points.
Installation and the Final Leak Check
Cut the replacement to match the original length exactly. Extra slack lets the hose lean against the cylinder or chafe on a frame tube, while a short piece keeps both fittings under constant strain. Push each end onto its barb dry, bottoming it out so the bead sits fully inside the rubber. Do not use grease, oil, or silicone as an assembly aid, however stiff the hose feels — lubricant on a sealing surface gives fuel a path to migrate and can wash into the float bowl. Warm water softens the end safely if needed.
Install new clamps just behind the bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly to firm, not crushed. Route the line back through its factory guides, well clear of the exhaust header and the electric shift wiring. Snug the float bowl drain screw, open the petcock, and watch both connections for a full minute; gravity feed exposes a bad joint almost immediately. Blot each fitting with a clean dry rag, wait, and blot again to separate a real leak from leftover fuel. Then start the engine, idle it a few minutes to fill the bowl, and inspect once more with the hose warm and vibrating, which is when a marginal clamp finally reveals itself.
One closing note worth knowing: pull and rinse the strainer screen inside the petcock while you have access, because it captures the debris an aging hose sheds. That screen is directly serviceable on a carbureted quad, whereas fuel-injected models place their filter inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, out of reach of any hose replacement. Once both joints stay dry, reinstall the bodywork and your 2025 Recon ES is good to go.
