Gear on the Bench and Air in the Shop

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves

Take the ventilation warning at face value. Do this outdoors if conditions allow. In a garage, open the door completely, shut off every ignition source in the room, and keep drained fuel sealed rather than sitting in an open pan.

Working the Old Line Off the Fittings

Relieve pressure by pulling the fuel pump fuse or relay, cranking the engine for a second or two until it stalls, switching the key off, and disconnecting the negative battery cable. Remove the seat and any side panels that block the tank outlet and the hose path toward the throttle body. Slide a drain pan beneath the first fitting and drape a rag across it before you separate the joint, because a depressurized hose still carries fuel.

Back each clamp well down the hose before disturbing the connection. Quick-connect couplers come apart when both tabs are pressed squarely and the fitting is drawn straight off; sideways prying cracks brittle plastic. If the hose has bonded to a barb, a gentle twist usually breaks the varnish seal, and if it refuses to release, slit the hose lengthwise and peel it away rather than forcing the fitting.

Fitting New Hose and Verifying No Leaks

Cut the replacement to the original length. Slack invites chafing against frame tabs and interference with steering, while a short piece keeps both ends under tension. Warming the hose end briefly in hot water makes a tight fit easy to seat. Return the hose to every original guide so it avoids exhaust heat and the front driveline hardware. Wipe each joint with a clean rag, then idle the engine for several minutes and inspect again before reinstalling the plastics.
