Small machines still deserve careful fuel system work, and the 2025 Renegade 70 EFI is a good example. The name tells you most of what you need to know before you pick up a tool: this youth quad is electronically fuel injected rather than carbureted, so there is no petcock lever to flip and no float bowl to drain. Fuel is pushed from a pump inside the tank through a short pressurized hose to the throttle body, and the whole job is built around respecting that pressure.
Confirming What You Are Working With
Because this is an injected 70, the classic gravity–feed approach does not apply. There is no valve under the tank to close, which means you either pinch the hose with line–clamping pliers or simply plan to catch what drains out. The fuel filter is integrated with the pump module inside the tank rather than sitting inline where you could swap it during the same job. On the chassis side, the Renegade 70 is a two–wheel–drive machine with no front differential in the way, so the hose run is short, direct, and considerably easier to reach than on the full–size 4x4 models in the family. That accessibility is the one genuine advantage of working on the small quad.
Why the Hose Hardens and Cracks
Fuel hose fails on a clock rather than an odometer, which matters on a youth machine that may only see a few hours of riding each season. The plasticizers that keep the rubber flexible slowly leave the compound, so the wall stiffens, then cracks. Heat cycles from the engine speed the process along, and the short unsupported spans on a compact chassis flex more per inch than a long run would.
Sitting idle is the bigger enemy here. Ethanol–blended pump gas left in the line between rides absorbs moisture and chemically softens the inner liner, leaving gum and varnish behind as it stales. Meanwhile, in dry desert or high–plains climates, the outside of the hose loses moisture and takes on a chalky, finely cracked surface. A youth quad that gets ridden lightly and parked often can develop a worse fuel line than a hard–used adult machine.
Signs the Line Needs Attention
- A gasoline smell around the tank area, strongest right after the engine is shut off
- A small wet spot or drip beneath the machine where it has been parked
- Cracks, a hardened glassy feel, or a flattened permanent groove where a clamp sits
- The engine bogging when a young rider gets into the throttle, or stumbling as though the tank is nearly empty
- Longer cranking than usual after the quad has sat overnight, which suggests pressure bleeding down through a weeping joint
Since this is a pressurized system, a small leak can atomize and evaporate before it puddles. If you smell fuel and cannot find the source, keep looking rather than writing it off.
Tools, Supplies, and a Safe Workspace
Set out everything before opening a fitting:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and eye protection
- A sealed fuel–rated container and a small drain pan
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the correct small inside diameter
- New clamps sized appropriately, since the tiny clamps on a 70 are easy to distort
- Line–clamping pliers, filling in for the petcock this model does not have
- A sharp hose cutter or razor, rags, and drivers for the seat and body panels
Ventilation is the safety point that actually matters. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it collects near the floor and can travel to a water heater pilot or a battery charger several feet away. Work outdoors or with the door fully open and air moving at floor level, keep sparks and flames out of the space entirely, and stay gloved the whole time. Fuel pulls the oils out of skin fast, and it is not something to rinse off casually.
Removing the Old Line
Relieve pressure first. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine briefly until it stalls, turn the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and any panel blocking access to the tank outlet, then trace the hose to the throttle body so you know both endpoints before you commit.
Slide the drain pan underneath and lay a rag over the joint you open first, because residual fuel sits in the hose even with pressure gone. Move spring clips or worm clamps well back along the hose before disturbing the fitting. If either end uses a quick–connect coupler, press the locking tabs squarely and pull the collar straight off without any sideways leverage, since aged plastic splits easily. A hose that has varnished to a barb should be twisted gently to break the bond, or slit lengthwise and peeled away so the fitting takes no abuse. Note the routing and any clip locations before the old piece is out.
Installing the New Hose and Checking for Leaks
Cut the replacement to match the original exactly. On a chassis this compact, an inch of extra hose is enough to let it rub a frame tube or contact something hot. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out, working dry. Do not apply grease, oil, or spray lubricant to any fuel fitting; a slick sealing surface is precisely how pressurized fuel escapes past a clamp. If the hose end is stiff, thirty seconds in hot water makes it cooperative.
Position the new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them gently and evenly. Small barbs do not need much clamping force, and overtightening cuts into the hose wall. A self–locking quick–connect gets pushed until it clicks, then tugged to confirm the latch, and receives no clamp at all. Route the hose back through its original guides.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle pressurizes the line, letting you catch a weep while the area is still dry. Wipe both joints with a clean rag and inspect closely, then start the engine and watch again at idle for a few minutes. Once it stays dry, refit the plastics and the seat. If the 70 still acts fuel starved after all of this, remember the filter lives inside the tank with the pump, and that assembly is the next place to look.
