Owners who tow, plow, and haul with a 2024 Kodiak 700 4x4 IRS tend to notice fuel problems as a loss of grunt long before they see a drip. The supply hose between the tank and the throttle body is worth understanding for that reason. Because this Kodiak is fuel injected, that hose is a pressurized line served by a pump inside the tank, with no manual valve anywhere on the machine to shut off flow.
What Goes Wrong Inside the Hose
Deterioration starts before anything is visible. New fuel line stays flexible thanks to plasticizers blended into the rubber, and those slowly leave under engine heat until the wall is stiff and glassy. A hose that cannot flex has to crack instead, and it cracks at the bends where stress concentrates. The 686cc single vibrates steadily and the independent rear suspension keeps the chassis in motion, so there is no shortage of movement to work those cracks open.
Arid conditions compound it by drawing moisture out of the rubber and hardening it from the surface inward. On the other side of the wall, ethanol-blended pump gas pulls water into the fuel and degrades the inner liner, softening and delaminating it, while any period the machine sits with fuel in it deposits gum and varnish that narrow the passage. A line failing in both directions can still look presentable, which is why age on the machine is the better guide than a quick visual check.
How the Machine Tells You
Symptoms tend to arrive in a predictable order. First comes odor, strongest right after shutdown while the circuit still holds pressure. Then a wet patch appears on the skid plate or the floor after the Kodiak has sat overnight. Somewhere along the way a fitting develops a dark ring of dust cemented in place by fuel that weeped and dried.
Meanwhile the engine begins telling its own version of the story. Restricted flow starves the injector, and the machine bogs when you load it, stumbles on hard throttle, or feels like it is running out of gas with plenty in the tank. Squeezing the hose along its length is the confirming test: chalky, hardened, or crazed sections mean the whole run has aged out, not just one spot. Remember that a pressure-side pinhole can atomize fuel and leave nothing on the ground, so smell alone justifies pulling the plastics.
Shop Setup and Gasoline Sense
Everything you need should be on the bench before the seat comes off:
- Nitrile or rubber gloves and a sealed fuel-rated catch container
- Hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not general-purpose carburetor line
- New clamps in the matching style, plus a quick-connect release tool if the tank end uses a locking coupler
- Line-clamping pliers, necessary here because there is no fuel valve to stop flow at a low-pressure section
- Sockets and drivers for the seat and side panels, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and a razor knife
- A flashlight and a stack of rags
Gasoline vapor is the real hazard, and it behaves in a way people underestimate. It is heavier than air, so it flows downward and pools at floor level right where water heater pilots, shop heaters, cord connections, and battery chargers sit. Work outdoors or with the door fully open so air moves down low, remove ignition sources from the space rather than trusting they are switched off, keep an extinguisher within reach, and disconnect the battery negative cable before anything opens.
Depressurize First, Always
This is the step that separates a tidy repair from a soaked garage. Pull the fuel pump fuse, then crank the engine until it stalls and will not restart, which consumes the fuel still under pressure. Switch the key off and disconnect the battery negative cable.
With the circuit dead, remove the seat and side plastics so the tank, the pump module on top of it, and the hose run to the throttle body are all in view. Slide a drain pan underneath, keep a rag over whichever joint you plan to open first, and accept that a depressurized line still contains standing fuel that will run out when the connection breaks.
Working the Old Hose Off the Fittings
Slide any clamp well back along the hose before disturbing the fitting it holds; wrestling a fitting with a clamp still on it is how barbs get damaged. If the tank end is a locking quick-connect, depress the release tabs squarely and pull straight off with no side load at all, since collars that have aged for several seasons crack under prying.
At a barbed fitting, break the varnish bond with a gentle quarter twist before applying pull, then work the hose off steadily. A section that has effectively glued itself to the spigot should be slit lengthwise with the razor and peeled away, which protects the fitting from a hard yank. Photograph the routing before the old hose is completely free. Four-wheel drive means front differential hardware occupies space the line must navigate, and the independent rear layout adds frame structure and movement, so the factory path with its specific clips exists for good reason.
Routing the New Line
Cut the replacement to the same length as the piece you removed and no longer, with a square end that will seat flat. Excess hose is not a cushion; it sags against a frame tube and wears through, or it crowds the steering.
Install both ends dry. Push each until the hose bottoms out against the fitting shoulder, and keep grease, oil, and silicone entirely off the sealing surfaces, because a lubricated joint gives pressurized fuel a path out from under the clamp and lets the hose creep off the barb over time. Dipping a tight end in hot water for a few seconds is the only help it needs. Set each clamp just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly to snug rather than crushed, since a band cutting deep into the rubber becomes the next leak. A self-locking quick-connect gets pushed until it clicks and then tugged firmly to verify engagement, with no clamp added. Put the hose back through every original clip so it stays away from exhaust heat and the front driveline.
Testing for Weeps
Reinstall the pump fuse and Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and brings the line to full pressure, which is your best opportunity to catch a poor connection while the area is still clean. Wipe both joints with a fresh rag and inspect again with the flashlight from below where a droplet would collect.
Start the engine and check a third time at idle, letting it run several minutes and adding throttle blips so vibration is part of the test. Worth noting before you button it up: the fuel filter on this injected Kodiak lives inside the tank with the pump rather than inline on the hose, so a new line will not resolve a restricted filter. Continued starvation after a clean install points to that module. Once both joints stay dry, reinstall the plastics and seat and take a short slow loop.
