Buy the wrong hose and you will be doing this job twice. That is the single biggest reason to sort out parts and preparation before a wrench touches the 2024 KingQuad 500AXi, because this machine runs Suzuki fuel injection and the hose feeding its throttle body operates under pressure that ordinary carburetor hose was never built to hold.

Choosing the Right Hose and Hardware

Match two things: the inside diameter of the original hose and its pressure rating. Injection–rated hose has a reinforced construction and a liner intended to resist ethanol–blended fuel, while the softer hose sold for carbureted quads will balloon or weep on a pressurized circuit. Bring the old piece with you or measure it carefully before cutting anything.

Hardware matters just as much. Some fittings on this platform use conventional clamps, while the connection at the pump plate may be a self–locking quick–connect that needs no clamp at all and sometimes wants a small release tool to separate. Buy fresh clamps rather than reusing the originals, since a clamp that has been torqued and heat–cycled for years no longer holds even tension.

Tools and a Straight Word About Gasoline

  • Nitrile or rubber gloves plus eye protection
  • Line–clamping pliers, standing in for the fuel valve this model does not have
  • An approved fuel container and a catch pan sized for more than you expect
  • Sockets, a plastic trim tool for the seat and panels, and a sharp blade
  • Rags, and a fire extinguisher within arm's reach

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks and gathers along the floor rather than drifting out an open window. Roll the machine outside if you can, or open the overhead door fully to get airflow at ground level. Portable heaters, floor–mounted lights, and anything with a standing pilot must be out of the area before you open a fitting.

No Petcock, No Float Bowl

The AXi badge tells you this KingQuad is injected, which removes several conveniences familiar from carbureted utility quads. There is no fuel valve under the tank to rotate off, no float bowl drain screw to empty the carburetor, and no gravity feed you can interrupt. A pump inside the tank pushes fuel through the supply hose to the throttle body, and pressure stays in that circuit after the engine stops. Relieving it deliberately is a required step rather than an optional courtesy, and it is the difference between a couple of drips into a rag and a spray across your workspace.

Why the Hose Wears Out and How It Shows

Fuel hose ages chemically. Heat cycles from the 493cc single pull the softeners out of the rubber, leaving it stiff and eventually cracked at the sharpest bend, and dry climates speed that up by drawing moisture from the wall. Ethanol in pump gas works from inside, attracting water and slowly attacking the liner, with any stretch of sitting leaving gum and varnish at the barbs.

What that produces on the machine:

  • A puddle or repeating damp patch beneath the tank area after parking
  • A lingering gasoline smell, which on a pressurized system often precedes any drip
  • Cracking, chalkiness, or swelling on the hose surface
  • Sections that have gone rigid and will not compress when pinched
  • Bogging under load, a lean stumble, or an engine acting starved with fuel still in the tank

Taking the Line Out

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank until the engine stalls, shut off the key, and disconnect the battery negative cable. With the seat and side plastics removed, position the catch pan and cover each joint with a rag before opening it, because fuel stays in the hose even after pressure is gone.

Slide clamps well clear of the fittings first. Locking connectors come apart when both tabs are pressed squarely and the coupler is pulled straight; sideways leverage cracks plastic that has been heat–cycled under the bodywork. Twist a varnished hose gently to break its bond with the barb, and if it refuses, slit it lengthwise and peel it away instead of straining the fitting. Photograph the routing while the hose is still installed, since this selectable 4x4 threads the line around front differential hardware and additional frame clearance points that a two–wheel–drive quad does not carry.

Installing the Replacement

Cut the new hose to the original length and no longer, then seat each end fully onto its barb. Do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone on a fuel fitting create a slip path for pressurized fuel past the clamp, and the resulting weep may take weeks to appear. Soften a tight hose end in hot water for a few seconds if needed.

Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting, tightening evenly and firmly without biting into the rubber. Where a self–locking quick–connect is used, push until it clicks and confirm with a firm tug rather than adding a clamp. Return the hose to every original clip so it maintains clearance from the front driveline and exhaust.

Checking for Leaks Before You Ride

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. The pump primes each cycle and pressurizes the hose with the engine still, which is the clearest possible condition for finding seepage. Dry both joints with a clean rag, start the 500AXi, and inspect again at idle and after a few minutes of warm running before reinstalling the bodywork.

Keep in mind that the fuel filter on the injected 500AXi is part of the in–tank pump assembly rather than an inline piece on the visible hose. Fresh hose cures a leak, but a restricted filter inside the tank produces the same starvation, so that is the next avenue if hesitation persists.
