Routing Is the Detail Most Owners Rush

On a four wheel drive utility machine, where the hose sits matters as much as which hose you buy. The 2024 KingQuad 400FSi carries a front differential, a driveshaft running forward, and the extra frame bracing that supports both, and all of that hardware sits near the path the fuel hose has to take from the tank to the throttle body. The factory clips and pass-throughs along that path are not decoration. They hold the line away from hot exhaust surfaces and away from anything that turns.

So before a clamp comes loose, photograph every clip, guide, and clearance point while the original hose is still in place. A two-wheel-drive quad would give this hose a shorter, more open run with fewer obstacles to negotiate. Here, a new hose left dangling out of its clips will find something to rub against, and rubbing is how a fresh line becomes a leaking line in one season.

Injected, Not Carbureted

The trailing letter in the FSi name identifies this as the fuel-injected KingQuad 400, paired with the five speed semi-automatic gearbox. Injection changes two specific things. There is no petcock or fuel valve beneath the tank, since a pump mounted inside the tank supplies fuel rather than gravity, and the hose you are working on carries genuine pressure that lingers after the key is switched off.

Because of that, relieving pressure is step one rather than a precaution. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay from the fuse block, crank the engine until it stalls from starvation, switch the key off, then disconnect the battery negative cable. Line clamping pliers give you a way to pinch off any low pressure section, taking the place of the valve the machine does not have.

The Way Fuel Hose Fails

Hose degradation is a chemistry story rather than a wear story. Plasticizers blended into the rubber keep it flexible, and they slowly migrate out of the hose wall over the years until the material cracks instead of bending. Conditions decide how fast the clock runs. Arid, low humidity air pulls moisture out of the rubber and hardens it from the outside inward, which is why machines in dry regions need hose sooner than their hour meters suggest. A hose caught between both can look entirely acceptable while shedding material toward the injector.

What to Look and Listen For

  • Fuel odor hanging around the machine, sharpest right after shutdown while pressure remains
  • A drip mark, damp streak, or stain on the skid plate or floor under the frame
  • Cracks opening on the surface when you flex the hose, or a stiff, glassy feel when you pinch it
  • Dirt caked onto a wet ring at either fitting, the usual evidence of a slow weep
  • Bogging under load, hesitation just off idle, or lean surging like the tank is nearly dry
  • A hose end that has swollen or gone soft where it slides over its barb

Keep in mind that a pressurized leak often atomizes and evaporates before it drips, so a strong smell over clean concrete is still worth chasing.

Supplies and Working Safely Around Fuel

Have gloves and eye protection, hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter, new clamps in the correct style, line clamping pliers, a quick-connect release tool if a locking coupler is present, an approved sealed fuel container, a shallow catch pan, a socket set, a small flat blade screwdriver, a razor knife, and clean rags laid out in advance.

Then deal with the fumes honestly, because vapor rather than liquid is the actual hazard. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, so it sinks to the floor and travels along it toward water heater pilots, propane shop heaters, and battery charger contacts. Work outdoors or with the overhead door completely open and get air moving at ground level. Shut off every flame and spark source, keep an extinguisher within reach, cap the container between pours, and never send drained fuel into a shop drain.

Taking the Old Line Out

With pressure relieved and the battery disconnected, remove the seat and any bodywork covering the tank outlet and the hose run. Slide the catch pan underneath and lay a rag over the joint you are about to open, since a depressurized hose still holds fuel that will run out when it comes free.

Push worm gear or spring clamps well back along the hose before disturbing the connection. On a locking quick-connect, depress both release tabs squarely and pull the coupler straight off with no sideways force, because plastic collars harden with age and crack when levered. Twist a bonded hose lightly to break the varnish at the barb rather than pulling hard on it, and if it will not release, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away. The hose is scrap already, while the fitting needs to survive.

Fitting the New Hose and Proving It

Cut the replacement to the exact length of the piece you removed. Surplus hose becomes a chafe point on a frame tube or a snag at full steering lock, and a short piece keeps tension on both fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it seats against the shoulder, and keep the entire installation dry. Grease, oil, silicone, and sealant stay away from fuel connections without exception, because lubricant on the sealing surface is exactly what lets pressurized fuel creep past a clamp. Soften a tight hose end in hot water if you need the help.

Seat the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly to firm, without cutting into the rubber. A self-locking quick-connect needs no clamp and is finished once it clicks and holds against a hard pull. Restore the hose to every original clip, verify clearance from exhaust and front driveline, and only then reinstall the plastics.

Finish with a proper leak check. Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line while everything is dry. Wipe each connection with a clean light rag so any trace of fuel is obvious, start the engine and inspect at idle, then look again after a few minutes of running and a slow lap. If the machine still runs starved despite dry, secure joints, remember that the filter on the injected 400FSi sits inside the tank as part of the pump assembly rather than inline on the hose, and that assembly is where the search moves next.
