  • An unmistakable gasoline smell around the seat and console area, worst in the first minutes after shutdown
  • Fine cracks, a chalky surface, or a section that has gone stiff and no longer squeezes evenly

Tools, Containers, and Fresh Air

Work outside or with the shop door wide open, put a fan low, unplug any charger, and have an extinguisher within reach before the first drop hits the pan.

The Climate and Chemistry Behind the Failure

Hose starts out soft because of plasticizers mixed into the rubber, and those compounds slowly cook out with time and heat. The result is a hose that feels glassy and hard. Once it stops flexing willingly, every mile of rutted ground concentrates movement into the short spans next to each fitting, and cracks open there first.

Regional conditions swing the timeline. Machines living in dry, arid country lose moisture from the hose wall faster and harden noticeably ahead of schedule. Ethanol content works from the inside out instead, pulling water into fuel that sits in the line during long idle periods and slowly degrading the inner liner into gum and loose material. Both mechanisms can be running at the same time on a hose that still looks acceptable, which is why replacement is driven by years in service, not by a quick glance.

Depressurizing the Circuit and Freeing the Hose

Take the pressure down before touching a fitting. Pull the fuel pump fuse, let the engine run until it dies, switch the key off, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Wipe both fittings clean, start the engine, and look again at idle using good light and a fingertip.

Run it several minutes, blip the throttle, and check once more before the plastics go back on.
