Buying the right piece of hose is half of this repair. Get the size and the rating correct on your 2024 TRX250 Recon and the installation practically does itself; guess at it and you will be back under the fender before the season ends.

Choosing the Correct Hose

Two numbers matter: inside diameter and fuel rating. The inside diameter must match the original so the hose grips the barbs on the fuel valve and the carburetor inlet with real tension. Hose that is a size large will seem to fit under a clamp and then weep at every temperature change, while hose that is undersized becomes nearly impossible to seat fully and stresses the fittings. Wall thickness counts too, since a thin wall kinks where the line curves toward the engine.

Buy hose specifically rated for gasoline. General purpose rubber tubing looks identical on the shelf and then swells, softens, and sheds material into your carburetor once ethanol-blended fuel gets to work on it. Pick up new clamps at the same time. Old spring clips lose tension over the years, and reusing a stretched clamp on a fresh hose is a false economy.

The System on This Machine

The 2024 Recon is carbureted. Its 229cc air-cooled single is fed through a carburetor, which means no in-tank fuel pump, no pressurized line, and nothing to depressurize before you start. A petcock under the tank offers ON, OFF, and reserve and serves as your shutoff. Clamps hold the hose at both ends rather than the locking quick-connect fittings found on injected quads, and the carburetor float bowl has a drain screw that empties the standing fuel. The Recon is also a 2WD chassis, so the hose takes a short, largely visible path with no front differential hardware to work around.

How Fuel Line Wears Out

Age does most of the damage. Heat cycling off the cylinder head drives plasticizers out of the rubber until the hose stiffens and glazes over, and cracking follows at whatever bend flexes most. Dry climates accelerate everything, since arid air draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the outside in.

The inside of the hose faces a different attack. Ethanol-blended gasoline absorbs water, and fuel standing in the line for months while the Recon sits idle slowly breaks down the liner, softening it and leaving gum in its wake. A hose can pass a visual inspection and still be shedding material downstream, which is why time in service carries as much weight as appearance.

Symptoms You Should Not Ride Through

Check for these signs regularly:

  • A gasoline smell that persists around the machine after shutdown
  • A small puddle or damp streak below the left side of the engine
  • Cracks, chalkiness, or a hose that feels like hard plastic when squeezed
  • Grime collected in a ring at a clamp, the mark of slow seepage
  • Bogging under load, a lean stumble, or symptoms of an empty tank when fuel remains

Gravity feed makes the running symptoms significant. A swollen inner liner narrows the passage enough to starve the carburetor at sustained throttle while idle stays perfectly normal, so a machine that runs fine in the driveway can still be telling you the hose is finished.

Prep, Tools, and Ventilation

Lay out the following before opening anything:

  • The new hose and new clamps
  • Gloves and eye protection
  • An approved fuel container and a drain pan
  • Line-clamping pliers in case the petcock does not fully seal
  • Flat-blade screwdriver, sockets, razor knife, clean rags, work light

Take the gasoline seriously. Its vapor is heavier than air, so it settles at floor level and travels toward any pilot light, charger, or spark it can reach. Work outdoors or with the shop door fully open at ground level, wait until the engine is cold, and spread used rags outside to dry rather than sealing them in a bin.

Removing the Old Line

Close the petcock, remove the seat, and take off the left side panel. Slide the pan beneath the carburetor, open the float bowl drain screw, and let the bowl run out through its drain tube. With the level dropped, back both clamps well away from the fittings.

Twist each hose end on its barb rather than pulling straight against years of varnish. Ends that have hardened completely should be slit lengthwise with a razor and peeled off the spigot, which protects the thin petcock outlet and the carburetor inlet from cracking. Note every clip and guide the hose passes through, along with its clearance from the exhaust and shift linkage, before the old piece is fully out.

Fitting the Line and Checking Your Work

Cut the replacement to the length of the original, no longer. Extra hose sags into hot surfaces or rubs the frame, and a short piece pulls at both barbs. Push each end on dry until it seats against the fitting shoulder, and keep lubricant of every kind off those surfaces — grease on a barb is the most reliable way to create a slow leak and let a hose walk off over time. Warm water softens a stubborn end enough to slide home.

Position the clamps just behind each bead and tighten evenly. Close the float bowl drain screw, turn the petcock to ON, and watch both joints while the bowl refills. Wipe the area dry, start the engine, and look again at idle. Take a short ride and inspect a third time warm, since heat and vibration expose a clamp that seemed fine cold. Only then does the bodywork go back on.
