The fitting at each end may be a straightforward barb with a clamp or a self–locking quick–connect coupler with molded plastic release tabs, so look closely and identify both before applying force to either.

The Aging Process Inside the Hose

Fuel line degradation runs on two tracks at once. On the outer wall, the plasticizers that keep rubber supple gradually leave the material under years of engine heat cycles, and the hose stiffens, takes on a glossy sheen, and eventually feels chalky. Arid climates speed this up meaningfully, since dry air pulls moisture out of the hose and hardens it from the surface inward. Once flexibility is gone, the vibration and chassis flex that a working utility 4x4 generates concentrates strain at the bends and just behind each clamp, and that is where hairline cracking starts.

On the inner wall, ethanol–blended pump gas is the problem. E10 draws in moisture and slowly breaks down the liner, and a machine left sitting with fuel in the system through a long off–season gives that reaction months to soften the material and lay down gum deposits. Signs You Have a Problem Building

Visual evidence usually follows: a damp patch or small puddle beneath the machine after it has sat, or a ring of caked dirt at a fitting where seeping fuel trapped dust and dried. Physically inspecting the hose adds more, so run it between your fingers to find hardened sections and bend it gently to open any surface cracks hiding in the curves. Performance symptoms round out the picture, including bogging under load, hesitation as you roll into the throttle, a lean stumble that feels like an empty tank, and longer cranking before the engine fires because pressure is bleeding down overnight. Do not treat a dry floor as proof of health, because pressurized fuel escaping a pinhole frequently atomizes and evaporates before it can form a drop.

Taking the Line Off the Machine

Depressurize the circuit before anything else. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine briefly until it stalls, turn the key off, and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the seat and the plastic covers over the tank so the entire run of hose is accessible from pump module to throttle body. Slide your pan underneath and keep a rag draped over each fitting as you open it, since bleeding the system does not empty the hose.

Slide every clamp back along the hose before you disturb its fitting. Quick–connect couplers come apart with both tabs compressed evenly and a straight rearward pull, never with sideways leverage, because plastic collars turn brittle with age. Barbed fittings respond to a gentle twist that shears the varnish bond, and a hose that has effectively bonded itself in place should be slit lengthwise and peeled off rather than yanked hard enough to damage the fitting. Take note of the path as it comes free. On this 4x4 chassis with independent rear suspension, the line passes front differential hardware and extra frame members that a two–wheel–drive quad does not carry, so it uses additional clips and clearance points worth photographing.

Installation and the Leak Check That Matters

Cut the new hose to exactly the length of the piece you removed. Long hose chafes against frame tubes or wanders into moving components, while short hose loads the fittings every time the suspension works. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms, and do the entire assembly dry. Nothing lubricated touches a fuel fitting, because grease or oil on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a ready path past the clamp. If the hose is too stiff to slide on, a few seconds in hot water softens it enough. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug rather than biting deep. Where a self–locking coupler is used, push until you feel the click, then pull firmly to confirm it latched, and leave the clamp out of it. Route the finished hose back through every original clip so it stays clear of the exhaust and the front driveline.

Restore the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without starting. Every cycle primes the pump and pressurizes the line, which is the ideal moment to spot seepage while the joints are still dry and clean. Wipe both connections, start the engine, and check again at idle and after blipping the throttle. Several minutes of verified dry running earns the plastics going back on. Should delivery still feel soft with a new hose fitted, the in–tank filter that shares the pump module is your next line of investigation, since this model carries no external filter to rule out first.
