It is a rubber component in a hot, vibrating environment carrying a fluid that works against it, and it is far easier to replace on your schedule than on the trail. This walkthrough covers the whole job on this specific fuel-injected, two-wheel-drive Rancher.
Where the Fuel Comes From on This Model
Honda's programmed fuel injection handles fueling here, so the layout differs from the carbureted Ranchers of the previous generation. An electric pump inside the tank pressurizes the supply hose that runs to the throttle body, which means no petcock exists to close off flow and the line holds pressure even after the engine stops. You will also find no serviceable inline filter on the visible hose, because filtration happens inside the tank as part of the pump module. As a 2x4, this Rancher lacks the front differential hardware that crowds the routing on 4x4 models, giving you a straighter shot at both ends of the hose.
Symptoms Worth Chasing Down
Fuel problems on an injected quad rarely start with a dramatic leak. More often it is a smell. A pressurized pinhole releases a fine mist that evaporates before it reaches the floor, so an unexplained gasoline odor around the seat after shutdown is one of the earliest reliable clues.
Beyond that, look for a puddle or a damp patch under the frame after a night parked, a crusted ring of dust where fuel has seeped and dried at a fitting, hairline cracks or a chalky finish on the hose, and a stiff section that will not compress between your fingers. On the performance side, bogging under load, a lean-feeling hesitation as revs climb, or an engine acting starved with plenty of fuel showing all deserve a fuel line inspection before you start chasing anything more complicated.
Why Rubber Hose Does Not Last Forever
Fuel hose hardens with age. The compound depends on plasticizers for flexibility, and heat cycles from the engine gradually drive them out. Once the hose turns rigid, ordinary chassis flex and vibration create fractures where the material used to simply bend. In dry, low-humidity country the process runs noticeably faster because the surrounding air continuously pulls moisture out of the hose wall.
The other half of the story is fuel chemistry. Ethanol-blended gasoline sitting motionless in a line for a season attracts moisture and degrades the inner liner, softening it and producing gum that can restrict flow or travel downstream. Because that deterioration is invisible from outside, hose age alone is a valid reason to replace a line that otherwise looks fine.
Preparing the Work Area and the Machine
Have your supplies staged before you break a connection: gloves, eye protection, a gasoline-rated sealed container, a drain pan, ample rags, replacement hose matched in inside diameter and rated for injection pressure, fresh clamps, line-clamping pliers standing in for the missing petcock, a razor blade, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and sockets for the seat and body panels.
Ventilation is the one thing not to compromise on. Gasoline fumes are heavier than air, so they settle and spread across the floor toward exactly the sort of ignition sources found at that level. Roll the Rancher outside or open the door fully, kill any pilot light or heater in the building, keep an extinguisher handy, and carry soaked rags out rather than leaving them piled up.
Taking the Old Line Out
Start by relieving pressure: remove the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it stalls, shut the key off, and disconnect the negative battery lead. Pull the seat and the covers over the tank, then trace the hose from the pump flange to the throttle body and photograph every guide and clip it passes through.
Slide the drain pan under the first fitting you plan to open, wrap the joint with a rag, and expect residual fuel regardless of how thoroughly you depressurized. Move clamps well back along the hose before disturbing anything. Locking couplers release when both tabs are depressed evenly and the connector is pulled straight off — angle it and you risk cracking the collar. If old varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, slit it lengthwise and peel it away instead of twisting hard on a fitting you plan to reuse.
Fitting and Securing the Replacement
Trim the new hose to the length of the original. Push each end fully home on its barb, dry, with no grease or lubricant anywhere near the sealing surface; anything slick there gives pressurized fuel a route to escape past the clamp. Hot water softens a tight end if you need help.
Place new clamps behind the raised bead at each fitting and tighten them evenly. Where the Rancher uses a self-locking quick-connect, no clamp belongs there at all: push until it clicks, then confirm with a firm pull. Return the hose to its original clips so it stays clear of exhaust heat and the electric shift components.
Leak Check and Final Assembly
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times so the pump pressurizes the line without the engine running. Inspect both joints with a light and a dry rag, then start the engine, let it idle, and check once more with a bit of throttle applied. Only after a stretch of leak-free running should the plastics and seat go back on, followed by a short test ride near home.
