Both are worth chasing on a 2024 Can-Am Outlander PRO HD7, because the HD7 single-cylinder Rotax is electronically fuel injected and its supply hose carries pump pressure rather than a gravity feed. With no petcock on the machine, a compromised line stays live until you cut power to the pump.

What a Deteriorating Line Looks Like

Work along the hose with a flashlight and your fingers before ordering parts:

  • A damp patch or small pool of gasoline on the skid plate or floor after the quad has been sitting
  • Fuel odor that peaks in the first minute after shutdown, while the circuit still holds pressure

How Poor Supply Changes the Way It Runs

A hose collapsing internally or shedding liner material restricts flow, and the HD7 tells you about it. Expect bogging when you load the engine climbing or towing, a lean stumble when the throttle snaps open, surging at steady cruise, and a general sense that the machine is running out of fuel while the gauge disagrees. Debris carried downstream from a degrading liner can foul injector spray and produce the same rough behavior. The Chemistry of Fuel Hose Aging

Rubber fuel line ages chemically rather than wearing out from use. Heat cycling from the engine drives the flexible plasticizers out of the hose wall, and season after season the material becomes stiffer until routine chassis flex opens cracks in the surface. In dry, low-humidity regions the process runs faster because the last moisture is pulled from the rubber, hardening it from the outside inward.

Working the other direction, ethanol-blended gasoline draws water vapor out of the air and degrades the hose liner, softening the bore while the exterior grows brittle. Fuel standing unused between work stretches deposits gum and varnish along the passage. Those processes overlap, which is exactly why a hose can pass a casual look and still be shedding material toward the injectors.

Tools, Materials, and Handling Gasoline

Stage everything before opening a fitting: nitrile or rubber gloves, a drain pan, a sealed fuel-rated container, hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter, fresh clamps matched to your fittings, a quick-connect release tool if a locking coupler is present, line-clamping pliers to stand in for the missing petcock, hand tools for the seat and panels, a razor blade, a flashlight, and clean rags.

Then address the space itself. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools on the floor rather than drifting away, so an open window overhead does nothing useful. Roll the machine outdoors or open the overhead door completely, shut down heaters with standing pilots, move chargers and ground-level lamps out of the area, and keep an extinguisher on the bench next to you.

Removal Without Breaking Anything

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stalls on residual fuel, then turn the key off and disconnect the battery negative. Remove the seat and the panels needed to reach both ends of the hose. Slide the pan into position and cover each joint with a rag as you open it, since a depressurized line still holds fuel that will find the frame rails.

Slide worm-gear or spring clamps well back before disturbing the joint. A locking quick-connect releases when both tabs are pressed squarely and the coupler is pulled straight along its axis; prying an aged collar sideways splits it. Break a varnish bond with a gentle twist, and if the hose refuses, slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel it off rather than putting force into the barb. Installation and the Final Check

Grease, oil, and silicone are all off limits on a fuel fitting, because anything on the sealing surface becomes an escape path once the pump builds pressure. A few seconds in hot water softens a stubborn hose end enough to slide on unaided.

Position new clamps just behind the raised bead on each barb and tighten evenly rather than crushing one side. A self-locking quick-connect takes no clamp: press until it clicks, then tug firmly to verify the latch has caught. Reseat the hose in every factory clip so it stays clear of driveline motion and exhaust heat.

Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the hose while everything is still clean, making even slight seepage obvious. Inspect both joints with a light and a white rag, then start the engine and check again at idle with vibration present. After several dry minutes, put the panels back.
