This machine carries a pressurized injection system fed by a pump inside the tank, so cracking a fitting on a live circuit sprays fuel instead of dribbling it. Handle the pressure first and the rest of the job is ordinary hose work you can finish in an afternoon.
Bleeding the System Down Safely
Locate and remove the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine. It will fire briefly and stall once the rail empties, which is exactly what you want. Turn the key off and disconnect the negative battery cable so nothing can energize the pump while your hands are in the fuel path. Even after that sequence, expect residual liquid in the hose; a depressurized line is not an empty one, so keep a rag and a catch pan ready for the first fitting you open.
Note that this model has no petcock to close. On a gravity-fed carbureted quad you would simply rotate a valve to off and let the float bowl drain, but nothing on this XT-P offers that option, which is why line-clamping pliers belong in your tool pile.
Knowing Your Fuel System and Chassis
The 976cc Rotax twin here runs electronic fuel injection, so the visible hose is a supply line under real pressure and the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump module rather than clipped inline where you can reach it. Fittings may be simple barbs with clamps or self-locking quick-connect couplers depending on where in the run you are working, and it is worth identifying which you have before applying force to either.
The MAX platform stretches the wheelbase to seat two, which lengthens the supply run and adds retaining clips compared with a solo Outlander. The 4x4 driveline contributes front differential hardware and extra crossmembers near the front of the run, so trace the entire path with a light before you start disconnecting things.
The Chemistry Behind a Failed Line
Fuel hose ages through two separate mechanisms working at once. Heat cycles from the V-twin and long exposure to sunlight and weather drive plasticizers out of the rubber, leaving it progressively stiffer until it can no longer flex with the chassis. In dry climates that hardening arrives early, because low ambient humidity pulls moisture from the hose wall year round.
Simultaneously, ethanol-blended gasoline holds water against the inner liner and slowly breaks it down, softening the hose from the bore outward. That is how a line ends up hard on the outside, degraded on the inside, and capable of shedding fine debris into an injection system that meters fuel through very small openings. Fuel left standing for a season causes more of this than fuel that gets used.
Reading the Warning Signs
Failing hose usually gives notice. Look and smell for a lingering gasoline odor after shutdown, a wet or crusted ring at a fitting, visible surface cracking, or a stretch that feels glassy and creaks when pinched. Puddles under the machine do happen, but on a pressurized system a small breach often mists and evaporates before it reaches the floor, so absence of a puddle proves nothing. Performance clues matter as much: bogging when you load the engine, a hesitation off idle, or behavior that suggests the mixture has gone lean all point toward restricted or leaking supply.
Parts, Tools, and Vapor Control

- New clamps of the correct type, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if a locking coupler is fitted

Work outdoors or with the door fully open. Gasoline vapor is denser than air and collects at floor level, exactly where water heaters and shop heaters draw combustion air, so eliminate every flame and spark source before opening the system. Keep the drain container closed except when you are actively filling it.
Removal, Installation, and Verification
With the system bled and the battery disconnected, pull the seat and side plastics and slide a pan under the work area. Photograph the routing, then slide each clamp well back along the hose before twisting a fitting free. Release quick-connects by pressing their tabs evenly and pulling straight; sideways prying cracks aged collars. If varnish has bonded hose to barb, slit it lengthwise and peel it off rather than stressing the fitting.
Cut the replacement to match the original exactly, then push each end onto its barb dry until it bottoms against the shoulder. Nothing goes on those fittings — no grease, no oil, no silicone — because any lubricant on a sealing face gives pressurized fuel a path out. Warm water softens a stiff end without leaving residue. Set clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly, and where a self-locking coupler is used, push until it clicks, tug to confirm, and add no clamp. Return the hose to every original clip so it stays away from the front driveline and hot surfaces.
Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line. Wipe both joints dry and inspect closely, then start the engine and check again at idle and with a light throttle blip. Give it several leak-free minutes before the plastics go back on. If fuel delivery still feels short afterward, the in-tank filter that lives with the pump on this XT-P is the logical next place to look.
