Everything about this repair hinges on one determination made before a tool comes out of the drawer. Treat a 2024 Outlander 700 X MR like an older carbureted machine and you will waste time looking for a shutoff valve that is not there, then take a face full of fuel from a line that was still under pressure. Sort the fuel system out first and the procedure becomes predictable.
Nail Down the Fuel System Before Anything Else
The X MR is fuel-injected. An electric pump submerged in the tank pressurizes the feed and pushes it forward to the throttle body on the Rotax single. What that rules out is significant: no petcock to rotate to OFF, no gravity feed to interrupt, and no float bowl drain screw of the sort you would open on a carbureted quad. The circuit stays pressurized after shutdown, so it must be bled down on purpose. The fuel filter is built into the in-tank pump assembly instead of hanging inline where you could see and swap it. Examine both ends of the hose, because some connections use self-locking quick-connect couplers with plastic release tabs rather than a barb and worm-gear clamp, and that determines whether you need clamps, a release tool, or both.
Extra Attention for a Mud Machine
The X MR package is aimed squarely at deep mud and water, which changes what you are likely to find when you start looking. Silt packs around clamps and clips and holds moisture against them, and a layer of dried mud on a hose traps heat instead of letting it dissipate. Wash the tank area and the underside thoroughly before you inspect anything, since a weeping fitting is completely invisible under a coating of dried muck. This is also a 4x4, so the hose routes around front differential hardware and frame clearance points a two-wheel-drive layout would not present, and packed clips may need cleaning before they will let the line go.
The Physics of Hose Failure
Fuel hose degrades from both surfaces at once. Heat cycling drives plasticizers out of the rubber, taking the hose from flexible to firm to brittle over years of use. Once flexibility is gone, engine vibration and body flex over rough terrain turn microscopic checking into cracks with depth. Low ambient humidity accelerates the process by drawing moisture out of the wall from the outside in.
Internally, ethanol-blended fuel absorbs water and slowly breaks down the inner liner. The damage is worst when the machine sits between outings with stale fuel standing in the line. The bore softens, swells slightly, and begins shedding fine material toward injector passages considerably tighter than a carburetor jet would be. Because none of that is visible from the outside, service age matters as much as what a visual check reveals.
Signs It Is Time
- Fuel smell concentrated around the tank, sharpest in the minutes right after you shut the engine off
- A damp ring or small pool on the skid plate or floor once the machine has sat
- Visible cracking, a chalky gray cast, or a length that feels rigid rather than springy when pinched
- Bogging when the engine is loaded, hesitation on hard acceleration, or fuel starvation with a half-full tank
- Grit welded into a band at a connection, which marks a joint that has been seeping and drying
On a pressurized system small leaks frequently mist and evaporate before reaching the ground, so keep trusting the smell even when nothing stains the concrete.
Gear Up and Ventilate
- Replacement hose rated for injection pressure, sized to the factory inside diameter
- New clamps in the correct style, or a quick-disconnect release tool for coupler fittings
- Line-clamping pliers, taking the place of the petcock this model does not have
- Nitrile or rubber gloves, safety glasses, and a generous supply of rags
- An approved sealed container for drained fuel and a shallow pan to catch spillage
- Sockets for the seat and plastics, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and a fresh razor blade
Treat the gasoline itself as the real hazard. Vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so ventilation at ground height is what matters. Work outside or open the shop door completely, shut down any appliance with a pilot flame in the space, keep grinders and torches out entirely, and put a fire extinguisher within arm's reach before you open a line.
Disconnecting the Old Run
Relieve pressure first. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, crank the engine until it stumbles and dies, switch the key off, then disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and enough side plastic to reach both ends of the hose. Slide the drain pan underneath and drape a rag over each connection as you open it, because a depressurized line still holds a meaningful amount of standing fuel.
Push each clamp well back before touching the fitting. Rotate the hose on the nipple to break the varnish that has bonded it, then pull it off straight rather than levering it. Quick-connects need both tabs depressed evenly and a pull in line with the fitting; sideways force cracks aged plastic. A hose that will not budge should be slit lengthwise and peeled off, protecting the nipple underneath. Note every clip and guide as it comes apart.
Fitting New and Checking for Weeps
Trim the new hose to the original length and nothing more, since excess line sags into the driveline or drapes onto hot exhaust. Push each end fully onto its fitting until it seats against the shoulder, and keep the whole process dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray stay away from fuel fittings, because any film on the sealing surface hands pressurized fuel a route to creep out and produces a slow weep that is a genuine pain to find. Hot water is the right softener for a stubborn end.
Install clamps just behind the raised bead on each nipple, tightening evenly until the hose is firmly captured without the band cutting the wall. Self-locking couplers get pushed until they click and then tugged hard to prove engagement, and they never receive a clamp. Restore the hose to its factory clips, checking that nothing sits where mud will pack against it.
To verify, reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off five times without cranking so the pump brings the line to working pressure. Wipe both fittings dry and watch for a bead of fuel. Start the engine and inspect once more at idle, since vibration occasionally exposes a joint that sealed while static. After several minutes of clean running, reinstall the plastics. If a bog under load persists, the in-tank filter is the next place to look.
