Building the Case Before You Order
Confirm the problem before spending anything. The evidence usually includes some combination of these:
- A gasoline smell around the tank, strongest in the minutes right after the engine is shut down
- A wet spot on the skid plate or a dried stain on the concrete beneath the machine
- Fine cracks, a chalky texture, or a section of hose that has lost all flex

Why Fuel Hose Does Not Last Forever

Once enough have gone, the hose is stiff, and a stiff hose cracks rather than flexing. Supplies and a Genuine Safety Note

- New hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter, not general purpose carburetor line
- Clamps in the correct style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank end uses a locking collar

- Sockets for the seat and plastics, a small flat-blade screwdriver, and a large supply of clean rags
Gasoline vapor is denser than air. That single fact should shape where you work, because vapor sinks to the floor and travels toward pilot lights, shop heaters, and power strips instead of drifting out an open window. Outdoors is the best answer. Indoors means the overhead door open all the way and a fan low to the ground moving air out of the space, with ignition sources removed and an extinguisher within a step.
Taking Out the Old Hose
With the pressure gone and the battery disconnected, pull the seat and any panels blocking access so the entire hose run is visible from pump module to throttle body. Set a drain pan under the low point and hold a rag around each fitting as you open it, since a bled hose still contains liquid fuel.
Slide clamps several inches back along the hose before the joint moves. Quick-connect fittings want both tabs depressed squarely and a straight axial pull, never a sideways pry, because the plastic collar becomes brittle with age. If varnish has bonded the hose to a barb, a gentle twist normally breaks the seal, and if it does not, cut the hose lengthwise and peel it off rather than putting force on the fitting. Photograph the routing, every clip, and the clearance points around the front driveline before the line is completely free.
Fitting the New Line and Proving It
Cut the replacement to the same length as what came off. Slack is not helpful, because a long hose chafes on the frame or migrates toward rotating driveline components. Press each end fully onto its fitting until it seats against the shoulder, and install everything dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place on a fuel connection, since any film on the sealing surface is what lets pressurized fuel creep past the clamp. Hot water for a few seconds is the only assembly aid a tight hose end should receive.
Install fresh clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, snug enough to seal without crushing the hose. Where the tank side uses a self-locking quick-connect, push until it clicks and confirm with a firm tug; that fitting holds itself and should not get a clamp. Route the hose through every original clip so it stays clear of hot exhaust and moving hardware.
Now verify the repair. Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line each time. Wipe both joints with a clean light-colored rag and watch for any stain reappearing. Then start the engine, let it idle several minutes, and inspect a final time with everything hot and fully pressurized. Bodywork goes back on only after the connections stay dry.
Finally, keep this platform detail in mind. The fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump assembly rather than an inline component on the visible line. New hose corrects a leak, but a restricted filter will keep starving the engine, so if the symptoms remain after a clean install, look inside the tank next.
