The 2023 Rancher 420 uses electronic fuel injection, so the supply line is fed by a pump inside the tank and carries real pressure whenever the system is live. Ordinary low pressure carburetor tubing has no business on this machine, and there is no petcock anywhere to shut off flow while you work. Get the parts right and the rest of the procedure is a calm hour with hand tools.
Choosing Hose and Hardware That Belong on an Injected Quad
Match two things: the inside diameter of the original hose and its pressure rating. Injection rated line has a heavier wall and a liner built to resist both pressure and modern fuel blends, and using something softer invites a swelling, ballooning hose that eventually walks off a barb. Take a look at the fittings while you are ordering, too. Some injected utility quads use worm gear or spring clamps at both ends, while others use a self locking quick connect at the tank that needs a small release tool rather than a screwdriver. Buy fresh clamps in the correct width instead of reusing hardware that has already been tightened onto a hose once.
How Fuel Line Degrades Over Time
Rubber fuel hose owes its flexibility to plasticizers, and those quietly leave the compound with every heat cycle the engine puts through the engine bay. The hose grows rigid, loses the ability to damp vibration, and begins to crack where it is stretched over a fitting or squeezed under clamp pressure. Because a clamp covers that exact area, a line can look entirely presentable until you slide the hardware back and find crazing underneath.
Outside conditions and fuel chemistry both push the process along. Dry, low humidity climates pull moisture out of the hose wall and stiffen it faster than damp conditions do. Ethanol blended gasoline works from the inside, drawing in moisture during periods when the Rancher is parked and slowly breaking the liner down into gum and loose debris. On a fuel injected engine that debris travels toward very fine passages, so internal condition matters just as much as surface appearance.
Symptoms That Send You Looking
Any of these warrants pulling the panels:
- Gasoline wetness on the skid plate or a stain on the floor after the machine sits
- A strong fuel smell right after shutdown, while the circuit still holds pressure
- Visible cracks, a chalky exterior, or a section that feels hard when you pinch it
- Bogging under load, hesitation at higher rpm, or the engine behaving as though it is low on fuel
- A dust caked ring at either fitting, the dried signature of a slow weep
Keep in mind that pressurized fuel escaping a pinhole usually atomizes and evaporates instead of dripping, so on this Rancher a persistent smell can be the only clue you get.
Preparation and a Straight Word on Gasoline
Set out gloves, eye protection, a drain pan, an approved fuel container, line clamping pliers, a razor knife, rags, and the hand tools needed for the seat and body panels. The pliers matter here because without a petcock they are your only way to pinch off a low pressure or return section.
Then handle the fuel properly. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, meaning it sinks and travels along the floor exactly where you are kneeling, so a cracked window above the bench accomplishes very little. Move the quad outdoors or open the overhead door fully to get airflow at ground level. Shut off water heaters and anything with a standing pilot flame, keep grinders, welders, and torches out of the space, use a sealed LED light, and set a fire extinguisher where you can grab it without getting up.
Relieving Pressure and Removing the Original Hose
Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay and crank the engine for a few seconds until it stalls from fuel starvation. That stall is your confirmation the line has released most of its pressure. Switch the key off, disconnect the battery negative cable, then remove the seat and the panels covering the tank and the hose run toward the throttle body. Position the pan and lay a rag over the first joint you open, because residual gasoline stays in the hose regardless of pressure.
Walk each clamp back along the hose before disturbing its fitting. Quick connects release by depressing both locking tabs squarely and pulling straight off, not by levering sideways, since aged plastic collars crack under prying. Rotate the hose on the barb to break the varnish bond, then draw it off, and if it refuses to move, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away instead of straining the fitting. Note each clip and clearance point as it comes out. Because this is a 4x4 model with a front differential and the supporting frame structure, the line follows a slightly more involved path than the same hose on a two wheel drive machine.
Fitting, Clamping, and Leak Testing
Cut the replacement to the original length so the hose neither sags toward hot exhaust nor pulls on its fittings as the engine moves. Push each end fully home until it bottoms against the shoulder, and do it dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray never belong on a fuel fitting, because lubricant on the sealing surface creates a path for pressurized fuel to escape past the clamp and can be carried into the injection system. A few seconds in hot water is the right way to soften a tight end.
Place new clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly, firm without cutting into the rubber. A self locking quick connect gets no clamp: push until the collar clicks and pull hard to confirm it has latched. Reseat the hose in every factory clip, keeping it away from the header and the front driveline.
Finish by pressurizing before you ride. Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump primes and loads the line while both joints are still dry and easy to read. Then start the engine, wipe the fittings with a clean rag, and watch them for several minutes at idle. Note as well that the fuel filter on this injected Rancher is packaged inside the tank with the pump rather than inline on the hose, so a lingering delivery complaint after a clean install points to that module and not to your new line.
