Clues That the Line Is Failing

Getting Set Up Properly

Old Hose Out

Remove the seat and the side plastics covering the tank outlet, then follow the hose toward the throttle body. Position a drain pan under the first fitting and hold a rag over the joint as it separates, because fuel remains in the hose even with pressure gone.

Slide clamps well down the hose before disturbing the connection. Quick-connect couplers come apart when both tabs are pressed evenly and the fitting is pulled straight back, never levered sideways, since aged plastic splits readily. If the hose has varnished onto a barb, a light twist usually breaks it free; if not, split the hose lengthwise with a blade and peel it off instead of stressing the fitting.

New Hose In, Then Verify

Trim the replacement to the original length so it neither chafes on a frame tab nor pulls at its ends. Push each end fully onto its barb with nothing on the sealing surfaces, because grease, oil, and silicone all give pressurized fuel a path past the clamp. Dipping the hose end in hot water for a few seconds softens it enough to seat without a fight. Install new clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly, firm without crushing the hose, and allow any self-locking quick-connect to click into position with no clamp at all.

Route the hose back through every original guide so it clears exhaust heat and the front driveline. Reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the ignition on and off several times without cranking, letting the pump pressurize the line while both joints are still dry and easy to inspect. Wipe each fitting with a clean rag and look closely, then run the engine at idle for several minutes and check once more before the bodywork goes on. Worth remembering as well: on this injected XC the fuel filter is part of the in-tank pump module rather than an inline element you can reach, so if delivery still feels soft after a dry, leak-free install, that assembly is your next stop.
