There is no petcock on this Outlander to close, so a compromised line stays live until you cut power to the pump.
Running a Proper Inspection First
Pull the seat and get a light on the hose run before you order parts. Work along its full length with your fingers and eyes both, checking for:
- Hairline checking or a chalky, faded surface, particularly where the hose bends
- A stiff section that does not spring back when you pinch and release it
- Dust or grime caked in a band right at a fitting, which is the classic signature of slow seepage
- A wet sheen at either connection immediately after the engine has been running

Why Fuel Hose Has a Shelf Life
Rubber fuel line ages chemically rather than wearing out from use. Dry climates accelerate that timeline because low humidity strips the last moisture from the rubber and hardens it from the outside in.
From the inside, ethanol-blended gasoline attacks the liner. Alcohol pulls water out of the air and breaks the bore down, so the hose softens internally while the exterior turns brittle. Fuel left standing for months adds gum and varnish. That combination produces a line that looks serviceable and is not, which is why age is a better replacement trigger than appearance.
Preparation and Gasoline Safety
Assemble the following before you open a single fitting: nitrile or rubber gloves, a drain pan, a sealed and fuel-rated container, hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter, fresh clamps in the correct style, a quick-connect release tool if the pump flange uses a locking coupler, line-clamping pliers to substitute for the missing petcock, hand tools for the seat and side panels, a razor blade, and a stack of clean rags.
Then handle the environment. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles at floor level, so ventilation low in the space is what matters — open the overhead door or work outside rather than relying on a window. Shut off heaters with standing pilots, move charger units and ground-level work lights away, and keep an extinguisher within reach.
Removal Without Damaging Fittings
Take out the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine until it stalls on its own, which bleeds most of the pressure. Turn the key off and disconnect the battery negative. Expose the tank outlet and trace the hose toward the throttle body. Slide the pan underneath and cover each joint with a rag as you open it, since a bled line still holds fuel.
Slide worm-gear or spring clamps well back before you twist anything. Release a quick-connect by pressing both tabs evenly and pulling straight along the axis of the fitting; those plastic collars grow brittle and split if levered sideways. Break a varnish bond with a gentle twist, or slit the hose lengthwise and peel it away rather than putting force into the barb. Because this is a two-up MAX frame with selectable 4x4, the line runs a longer path than a standard Outlander and threads past front differential hardware and additional crossmembers that a two-wheel-drive quad does not carry. Photograph every clip while the old hose is still in place.
Fitting the Replacement and Signing Off
Cut the new hose to match the original length precisely. Slack invites chafing and steering interference; a short piece tugs at both fittings whenever the chassis moves. Push it fully onto each barb until it bottoms, and assemble it dry. Nothing lubricated belongs on a fuel fitting, because grease or silicone on the sealing surface hands pressurized fuel an escape route. Hot water briefly applied to the hose end is the only assistance needed. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten them evenly. A self-locking quick-connect requires no clamp: press until it clicks, then pull firmly to confirm engagement.
