Utility quads get used, not babied, and the fuel plumbing on a 2022 Kodiak 700 4x4 IRS spends its life absorbing heat, vibration, and whatever the trail throws at the underside. When that hose starts to go, replacing it is well within reach of an owner with intermediate mechanical skills, provided the sequence is right for an injected machine.
Fuel Injection Means No Petcock
The most important fact about this Kodiak is what it lacks. There is no manual fuel valve to close, because electronic fuel injection draws through a pump mounted inside the tank. Whenever the key is on, the hose from the pump module to the throttle body carries pressure, and even after shutdown it holds residual pressure for a while.
Two practical consequences follow. First, you must bleed the pressure down before opening a fitting, not after. Second, the tank-side connection is often a self-locking quick-connect coupler rather than a barb with a clamp, so identify what you have before ordering clamps. Line-clamping pliers earn their place in the toolbox on machines like this precisely because there is no valve to stop flow at a low-pressure section.
The Long Slow Hardening
Fuel hose does not wear out from carrying fuel; it ages out. The plasticizers that make new line soft and bendable gradually migrate out under engine heat, and the wall becomes stiff and glassy. Once flexibility is gone, the vibration of the 686cc single and the continual chassis movement of an independent rear suspension put stress into a material that cannot absorb it, and hairline cracks form at every bend and fitting.
Climate and fuel both accelerate the process. In dry, low-humidity regions, moisture is drawn out of the rubber and the hose hardens from the outside inward noticeably faster than it would in damp country. Meanwhile ethanol-blended gas attacks the inner liner, pulling water into the system and degrading the hose from within, and any stretch where the machine sits unused lets gum and varnish collect inside the passage. That combination is why a line can present well on the surface while crumbling internally toward the injector.
Warning Signs on a WorKing Quad
Give the machine a proper look before you commit to the repair:
- Fuel pooled on the skid plate or garage floor after the Kodiak has been parked
- A strong gasoline smell, sharpest right after shutdown while the circuit still holds pressure
- Cracking, chalky discoloration, or a hardened section you can feel by squeezing the hose
- Dust caked into a dark ring at a fitting, which is dried fuel from repeated weeping
- An engine that bogs under load, stumbles on hard throttle, or acts like the tank is empty when it is not
Do not dismiss a smell just because nothing is dripping. Fuel escaping a pressurized pinhole can atomize and disappear into the air, which makes odor a more sensitive test than a wet floor on this platform.
Gathering Supplies Safely
Bring together gloves, a sealed fuel-rated catch container, replacement hose rated for injection pressure in the original inside diameter, new clamps of the correct style, line-clamping pliers, a quick-disconnect release tool if the tank end calls for one, sockets and drivers for the seat and plastics, a small flat-blade screwdriver, a razor knife, a flashlight, and plenty of rags.
The genuine hazard in this job is vapor, not liquid. Gasoline fumes are heavier than air and sink to floor level, collecting exactly where water heater pilots, shop heaters, extension cord connections, and battery chargers live. Work outdoors or with the door fully open so air moves at ground level, physically move ignition sources out of the space rather than trusting a switch, keep an extinguisher within arm's reach, and disconnect the battery negative cable before any connection comes apart.
Old Line Out
Depressurize first. Pull the fuel pump fuse, crank the engine until it stalls and refuses to restart, turn the key off, then disconnect the battery negative. Remove the seat and side plastics to expose the tank, the pump module, and the hose run toward the throttle body.
Slide a drain pan underneath and drape a rag over the first joint you plan to open, because standing fuel in the hose comes out as soon as the connection breaks. Move any clamp well back along the hose before disturbing its fitting. On a locking coupler, depress the release tabs squarely and pull straight off with no sideways force; aged plastic collars crack when pried. At a barbed fitting, twist the hose a quarter turn to break the varnish bond built up over the years, then work it off steadily. Where the hose has hardened onto a spigot, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away rather than risking the fitting. Photograph the routing and each clip before the old piece is fully out. On this 4x4 the line works around front differential hardware, and the independent rear layout adds frame structure and movement it must clear.
New Line In
Lay the old hose next to the new one and cut to identical length, square across the end. Extra hose is not a safety margin; it droops into a frame tube and rubs a hole in itself, or it crowds the steering. Push each end onto its fitting until it bottoms out fully against the shoulder.
Assemble dry, without exception. Grease, oil, and silicone all leave a film that lets pressurized fuel creep out from under a clamp and encourages the hose to migrate off the barb over time, so keep every lubricant away from the sealing surfaces. Softening a tight end in hot water for a few seconds is the only assistance appropriate here. Set each clamp just behind the raised bead on the fitting and tighten evenly to snug, resisting the urge to crush the rubber, since a band bitten deep into the wall becomes tomorrow's leak. A self-locking quick-connect gets pushed until it clicks and then tugged firmly to verify it latched, with no clamp added. Restore the hose to all of its factory clips so it stays clear of exhaust heat and the front driveline.
Verify, Then Ride
Put the pump fuse back, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off four or five times without cranking. Each cycle brings the circuit up to pressure and gives you a clean, dry surface to read. Study both joints, wipe them with a fresh rag, and check again with the flashlight from below where a droplet would collect.
Start the engine and inspect once more at idle, letting it run several minutes and adding a few throttle blips so vibration is part of the test. One last platform detail: the fuel filter on this injected Kodiak is inside the tank as part of the pump assembly, not an inline element on the hose you just changed, so new line will not fix a restricted filter. Persistent starvation after a clean installation points to that module. When both joints stay dry, reinstall the plastics and seat, then ride a short slow loop and take one final look underneath.
