Fuel work is one of the few jobs on a 2022 Grizzly 700Fi where preparation counts for more than mechanical skill. The hardware is simple, the fasteners are ordinary, and the actual hose swap takes minutes. What takes planning is doing it without spilling fuel across your garage floor or opening a pressurized fitting with nothing staged to catch what comes out.

Staging the Job Properly

Before a single panel comes off, have this laid out:

  • Replacement hose rated for fuel injection pressure and matched to the original inside diameter
  • New clamps in the correct size, since aged clamps and spring clips lose their grip
  • A quick connect release tool if the connection at the pump plate is a locking coupler rather than a barb
  • Line clamping pliers, which take the place of the shutoff valve this machine does not have
  • Nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a generous stack of shop rags
  • A sealed metal or fuel rated container plus a shallow drain pan
  • Basic sockets, a flat blade screwdriver, and a sharp utility knife

Ventilation Is Not Optional

Here is the safety point that deserves your attention. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air, which means it does not float out an open window; it sinks and crawls across the floor, collecting in low spots. That makes a closed garage containing a water heater, furnace, or shop heater a genuinely bad place to open a fuel line on a pressurized system. Do this outdoors if the weather cooperates, or with the overhead door fully raised and a fan pushing air across the floor to move vapor out at ground level. Shut off any pilot light or heating element in the space, keep a fire extinguisher within arm's reach, and take fuel soaked rags outside rather than dropping them into a shop bin.

How Fuel Reaches the Engine Here

The Fi in this model designation means electronic fuel injection, and that shapes the whole procedure. An electric pump mounted inside the fuel tank pressurizes the hose and feeds the throttle body, where the injector does the metering. Nothing here is gravity fed, and there is no petcock beneath the tank to twist closed. Consequently the pressure has to be bled down before any fitting is opened, and the new hose must be rated for injection duty rather than the low pressure work a carburetor feed line does.

One more layout detail matters for diagnosis. On this platform the fuel filter is integrated into the in-tank pump assembly rather than hanging inline on the hose you can see and reach. A fresh hose solves cracked, weeping, or collapsing hose; it does nothing at all for a restricted filter, so keep the in-tank module on your list if fuel delivery still feels off afterward.

Why Hose Fails and What It Looks Like

Heat cycling slowly drives plasticizers out of the rubber, and the hose that remains is stiff instead of supple. It stops flexing with the chassis, and cracks open at bends and clamp shoulders. Arid climates accelerate that hardening by drawing moisture out of the hose wall, while ethanol blended fuel works from the bore inward, pulling in atmospheric moisture and degrading the inner liner into gum and softened material during long periods when the machine sits with fuel standing in the line.

What you notice on the machine is a fuel puddle or damp streak on the skid plate, a sharp gasoline smell around the center of the quad after shutdown while pressure lingers, cracking or a chalky bloom on the hose, a hard glassy feel when you pinch it, and an engine that bogs, hesitates, or surges lean as though the tank were low. Watch for a caked ring of dirt at a fitting too, which is the residue of slow weeping. On an injected machine a pressure side pinhole can atomize into vapor and never drip, so a persistent smell over a dry floor still warrants a look.

Removal, Then Installation

Start by pulling the fuel pump fuse from the box under the seat and running the engine until it starves and stops. Key off, disconnect the negative battery cable, then remove the seat and side plastics, keeping the XT-R trim fasteners organized. Follow the hose from the pump plate back to the throttle body so you know the full run before disturbing it.

Slide the drain pan under the joint and lay a rag over it as you release it, because even a bled circuit holds fuel. Move clamps well down the hose first. A plastic quick connect wants its tabs squeezed evenly and the coupler pulled straight off, never levered sideways. Hose varnished onto a barb should be twisted gently to break the bond, and if it holds fast, slit it lengthwise and peel it away rather than prying on the fitting. Note the routing as it comes out: with 4x4 and independent rear suspension there are front differential and rear linkage clearance points a 2WD chassis would not have, so photograph the clips.

Cut the new hose to the same length as the old one, no more, since surplus sags into the frame to chafe or drifts toward the exhaust. Push each end fully onto its barb dry, keeping grease, oil, and silicone entirely away from the sealing surfaces — lubricant there is a leak path for pressurized fuel. Hot water softens a stubborn end. Set new clamps just behind the raised bead and tighten evenly without crushing; a self locking quick connect gets no clamp at all, just a press until it clicks and a firm tug to confirm the latch. Return the hose to every original clip.

Proving the Repair

Reinstall the fuse and Reconnect the battery, then cycle the key on and off several times without cranking the engine. Each cycle runs the pump and brings the circuit to pressure, letting you inspect both connections while they are still dry so even a slow weep is easy to see. Wipe the fittings with a clean rag, look and feel carefully for any bead of fuel, then start the engine and inspect a second time at idle. Give it several minutes of dry running, take a slow lap around the yard, and check both joints once more while everything is warm before you reinstall the bodywork and head out.
