How Fuel Gets From Tank to Engine on This Model
Understanding the plumbing makes the whole job obvious. On a 2022 KingQuad 400FSi, a pump sits inside the fuel tank along with the filter, draws fuel from the bottom of the tank, and pushes it under pressure through a hose to the throttle body feeding the single cylinder engine. That is the entire visible fuel path, and the hose is the only part of it you can hold in your hand. There is no petcock, no fuel valve, and no gravity feed, because the FSi is the fuel-injected version of the KingQuad 400 rather than a carbureted machine.
Two facts flow from that architecture. First, the hose stays pressurized after the key is switched off, so pressure gets relieved on purpose before you open a fitting. Second, the filter is not something you service on the visible line, since it lives in the tank as part of the pump assembly. Replacing hose solves hose problems and nothing more, which is useful to know before you start diagnosing.
Reasons the Hose Goes Bad
Rubber fuel hose has a service life measured in years rather than hours. Plasticizers keep it flexible, and they gradually migrate out of the hose wall until the material behaves like brittle plastic and cracks where it used to bend. Engine heat cycles accelerate that loss, and the vibration and chassis flex a working utility quad absorbs across rough ground push shallow cracks deeper each season.
Setting and fuel blend govern the timeline. Low humidity climates draw moisture out of the rubber and harden it from the outside inward, so identical machines age at very different rates depending on region. Ethanol blended pump gas comes at the inner liner instead, absorbing water and degrading the rubber during any stretch when the fuel sits unused. A hose exposed to both can look presentable from the outside while shedding material toward the injector, which is why the calendar is a better guide than a glance.
Symptoms That Point at the Line
- A gasoline smell around the machine that will not go away, sharpest just after shutdown
- A drip, damp streak, or stain on the skid plate or the floor beneath the frame
- Cracks that open when the hose is flexed, or a stiff, chalky texture when pinched
- Dirt caked into a wet ring at either fitting, the classic mark of a slow weep
- Bogging under load, hesitation off idle, or lean surging as if the tank were nearly empty
- A swollen or gummy hose end where it slips over its barb
Because the supply hose is pressurized, small leaks frequently atomize and evaporate rather than dripping. An odor with nothing visible on the floor still deserves an inspection.
Preparation and Gasoline Handling
Gather gloves and eye protection, hose rated for fuel-injection pressure in the original inside diameter, new clamps in the matching style, line clamping pliers to serve as your shutoff, a quick-connect release tool if a locking coupler is present, an approved sealed fuel container, a shallow catch pan, a socket set, a small flat blade screwdriver, a razor knife, and a stack of clean rags.
The genuine hazard here is vapor rather than liquid. Gasoline fumes are heavier than air, which means they sink to floor level and creep outward toward water heater pilots, propane shop heaters, and battery charger contacts. Do the work outdoors or with the overhead door completely open, get air moving low in the space instead of only overhead, and shut off anything holding a flame or capable of a spark. Keep an extinguisher within reach, cap the container between pours, and never route drained fuel into a shop drain.
Removal Step by Step
Relieve pressure to begin. Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay from the fuse block, crank the engine until it stalls from starvation, turn the key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the seat and any bodywork covering the tank outlet and the hose run to the throttle body.
Position the catch pan and lay a rag over the joint you are about to open, since a depressurized hose still holds fuel. Push worm gear or spring clamps well back before disturbing the connection. Where a locking quick-connect is used, depress both tabs squarely and pull the coupler straight off, avoiding sideways leverage that cracks aged plastic collars. Twist a stuck hose gently to break the varnish bond at the barb, and if it refuses to release, slit it lengthwise with the razor and peel it away rather than scarring a fitting you intend to reuse.
Watch the routing on the way out. This 4x4 chassis places front differential hardware and additional frame structure alongside the hose path, so each factory clip has a job to do keeping the line clear of exhaust heat and rotating parts. A two-wheel-drive layout would give the hose a simpler run.
Installation Without Shortcuts
Cut the replacement to the same length as the old hose. Extra length is a chafe point against a frame tube or an interference at full steering lock, and a short piece pulls at its fittings. Push each end fully onto its barb until it bottoms out against the shoulder, and install the hose dry. Grease, oil, silicone, and sealant are all off the table on fuel fittings, because lubricant on the sealing surface is precisely what allows pressurized fuel to creep past a clamp. Hot water softens a stubborn hose end without leaving anything slippery behind.
Seat the clamps just behind the raised bead on each fitting and tighten them evenly to firm rather than crushing the hose wall. A self-locking quick-connect takes no clamp at all and is finished once it clicks and survives a hard tug. Return the hose to every original clip and verify clearance from the exhaust and the front driveline before reinstalling the plastics.
Leak Check and Closing Out
Reinstall the pump fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking. Each cycle runs the pump and pressurizes the line while the joints are still dry, which is the best condition for catching a weep. Wipe every connection with a clean pale rag so the smallest bead of fuel is visible, then start the engine and inspect at idle, take a slow lap, and check once more with the machine warm.
Circle back to that in-tank filter one final time. Because it is integrated with the pump assembly rather than sitting inline, no amount of new hose will improve flow through a restricted filter. If the 400FSi still feels fuel starved after a clean, dry installation, the pump and filter assembly inside the tank is the next component to evaluate.
