Age does the heavy lifting. Rubber slowly loses the plasticizers that keep it flexible, so a hose that started soft becomes stiff and glassy after enough heat cycles and seasons in the weather. Once the material stops flexing, the vibration a single-cylinder engine feeds into the frame opens fine cracks at the bends and barbs. Dry climates accelerate this, because low-humidity air draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it from the outside in. Simultaneously, ethanol-blended pump gas attracts water and degrades the inner liner, leaving gum and soft spots, especially during stretches when fuel sits in the line unused. Reading the Warning Signs

Ventilation and Removing the Old Line
