Replacing the Fuel Supply Hose on a 2022 Sportsman 570

The single most useful thing to establish before opening a fuel joint on a 2022 Sportsman 570 is what kind of system you are working on. This machine uses the ProStar 567 single with electronic fuel injection. There is no petcock under the tank, no gravity feed, and no float bowl to drain. Instead an electric pump submerged in the tank pushes fuel forward under real pressure, and it does so any time the key is switched on. Every step below follows from that.

Anatomy of the Fuel Circuit

The pump module lives inside the tank and carries the filter element as part of the same assembly, which is why there is nothing inline on the exposed hose to unscrew and replace. Pressurized fuel leaves the pump outlet flange, travels through the supply hose, and reaches the throttle body where the injector meters it into the intake tract. Because the circuit holds pressure after shutdown, it has to be deliberately bled before anything is disconnected.

Fitting styles differ. You may find worm gear or spring clamps at both ends, or a self-locking quick-connect coupler that snaps onto a nipple and takes no clamp at all. Check which you have before ordering hardware. Routing is worth a look as well, since this is a 4x4 platform: the front differential and driveline components crowd the forward area, so the hose follows a longer path through more clearance points and retaining clips than a two wheel drive chassis would demand.

Causes of Hose Failure

Degradation comes from both surfaces. On the outside, plasticizers that keep the rubber compound flexible bleed out under engine heat and constant vibration until the hose turns rigid. A rigid hose cracks wherever the chassis flexes it, and those cracks deepen with every season. Arid climates make it worse, since low humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and hardens it faster than hours alone would suggest.

On the inside, ethanol-blended pump gas is the aggressor. E10 absorbs atmospheric water, and fuel standing motionless through a long layup attacks the liner while leaving gum and varnish deposits at the barb joints. The two processes are unrelated, so a hose can look smooth and flexible outside while its liner is already breaking apart and shedding debris toward the injector.

Indicators That It Is Time

  • Gasoline smell hanging around the tank area, sharpest immediately after shutdown while pressure remains in the line
  • Fine surface cracks, a chalky gray cast, or a hardened stretch you can feel by pinching along the hose
  • A caked dust ring or dark crust at either fitting from repeated drying seepage
  • A damp patch or puddle under the machine after it has sat overnight
  • Bogging under load, stumbling on acceleration, or a lean surge like a nearly empty tank

On a pressurized system a small leak often atomizes and evaporates before it can drip, so a clean floor does not clear the hose. Smell and touch outperform sight here.

Supplies, Tools, and Working Safely

  • Fuel-injection rated hose in the original inside diameter, never general purpose carburetor line
  • New clamps of the matching style, plus a quick-disconnect release tool if a locking coupler is present
  • Line-clamping pliers for low pressure or vent hose, since there is no valve to shut on this machine
  • An approved sealed container, a shallow catch pan, rags, nitrile gloves, a razor knife, and a flashlight
  • Sockets and drivers for the seat and side plastics

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and settles across the floor, drifting toward water heater pilots, shop heaters, and power tools instead of rising and dispersing. Work outdoors when you can, or open the overhead door fully and place a fan at floor level moving air out. Keep an extinguisher within arm's reach and leave the gloves on throughout, because fuel pulls the oils straight out of skin.

Bleeding Pressure and Removing the Line

Pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, then crank the engine for a few seconds until it stalls on residual supply. Key off, and disconnect the battery negative cable so the pump cannot run again. Remove the seat and any side plastics blocking access to the tank flange and the hose run heading toward the throttle body. Slide the pan into place and drape a rag over the first joint before opening it, because standing fuel stays in the hose even after depressurizing.

Move clamps well back along the hose before disturbing a fitting. On a quick-connect, press both release tabs squarely and pull straight off; never pry sideways on an aged plastic collar. When varnish has glued the hose to a barb, a gentle twist normally breaks the bond, and if it does not, slit the hose lengthwise and peel it off in halves rather than distorting the fitting. Photograph the routing before the old hose is completely free so each clip and clearance point can be reproduced exactly.

Fitting the New Hose and Finishing

Cut the replacement to match the original length; surplus hose sags into moving parts or rubs a frame edge until it wears through. Seat each end completely on its barb, dry. Grease, oil, and silicone spray have no place on a fuel fitting, because anything slippery on the sealing surface gives pressurized fuel a route out from beneath the clamp. Dip a tight end in hot water for ten seconds and it will slide on unaided.

Position new clamps just inboard of the raised bead so they cannot walk, and tighten evenly instead of hard. A quick-connect coupler needs no clamp: push until the collar clicks, then pull firmly to confirm the latch engaged. Feed the hose back through every original clip. Then reinstall the fuse, Reconnect the battery, and cycle the key on and off several times without cranking so the pump pressurizes the line while the area is clean and dry. Inspect both joints, wipe them, and inspect again. Start the engine and hold a fresh rag near each fitting at idle for a minute or two before the plastics and seat go back on.

If a delivery complaint survives a clean installation, remember that the filter on this injected 570 sits inside the tank as part of the pump assembly. A new hose cannot help a restricted element, so that module becomes the next item to examine.
